First television show you remember?

I cannot recall the name, so maybe someone here can help.
Back in the late 60's I can remember watching a show, it was hosted by a guy that went by "Uncle Max" I think???

I remember this guy wearing one of those rainbow scarfs...ge has curly hair too, I think.... He also did some magic....

Any help on this one?

What scared me so much was that the stories were true!

I was just a toddler, but I do barely remember it. There's also Circus Boy, Sky King and something with William Bendix.

The first year that show was on, Jackie Gleason played Chester Riley. Bill Bendix took over the part from Jackie.

...Kukla, Fran & Ollie; Beanie; John Cameron Swayzee. How about, before TV? Serials at the movies? Guess I'm showing my age.

I was only four at the time, but I remember the roof antenna being laid out the whole length of our living room before my father took it up to put on the roof. I didn't know what it was, but I was very interested in walking along it and jumping back and forth over it.

Howdy Doody was certainly one of the first things I watched. That and Rootie Kazootie and The Merry Mailman (with Crusader Rabbit cartoons) and a bunch of other weird kid shows, like Pinky Lee, and some sort of circus show on Saturdays with a platinum blonde hostess. It was all pretty crude and amateurish.

I also remember seeing a lot of very strange old stuff. It took several years before the movie studios opened their vaults to tv, so the tv stations had to show anything they could get. There were even silent cartoons -- Farmer Alfalfa, as I recall (http://www.toonopedia.com/alfalfa.htm) and Felix the Cat (http://www.toonopedia.com/felix.htm).

The circus show was Super Circus with ringmaster Claude Kirschner and the blonde majorette was Mary Hartline. Along with the ones you mentioned was Lucky Pup, The Magic Cottage, Ding Dong School, & Andy's Gang (Twang your magic twanger, Froggie!).

We got our set around 1949 and my mother set up chairs like in the movies and invited friends over. My dad would have to fiddle around on the roof to get the antenna pointing in the right direction. Those old sets always needed adjusting – the horizontal and vertical hold knobs just wouldn't stay set. The repairman was always coming to replace those big old tubes, and sometimes pull the whole chassis out and take it to the shop and leave us with an empty cabinet. The bad news was when the picture tube blew.

Friday nights was I Remember Mama, Dragnet, Life of Riley, and the Friday Night Fights. Saturday morning was Children's Theatre and Winky Dink. Saturday night was Sid Caesar, Jackie Gleason, and Perry Como, my grandmother's favorite. Then came Sea Hunt and Your Hit Parade. Sunday mornings was The Children's Hour, a kids' variety show, Jon Gnagy (an artist who taught you how to draw).. A few years later on was Wonderama.

I liked all those live dramas, too, like Robert Montgomery Presents, The Loretta Young Show, and Rheingold Theatre. Early TV was a mixed bag. It was brand new and no one quite knew what to do with it, so you got radio shows like Jack Benny, along with silly game shows, serious drama, and kid shows. It was a great time.

Sorry, haven't got a clue on what yours was :shrug: . Sounds like maybe it was a local show. They had tons of those for kids back then.

It was a local show on Channel 9 in NYC (WOR, now Superstation WWOR in Secaucus NJ).

The host was a man named Claude Kirshner, who dressed as a ringmaster. His sidekick was a clown puppet named "Clowney". Claude Kirschner was probably the worst ventriloquist of all time.

The show was on every weeknight at 7:00. When it ended at 7:30, Claude Kirshner would say "And now it's time for all of you to go to bed."

I also remember "Howdy Doody" when it was on five days a week, "Ding Dong School" and "Romper Room".

And "Cartoon Playtime" with "Uncle" Fred Scott.

And it kept getting preempted one summer because they kept talking about Watergate. I kept hearing about "water gates" and "leaks," and thought this whole thing was about someone leaving open a gate that held back the water, and the White House getting flooded. Didn't seem like something that should have taken precedence over my TV shows all summer!

(Let's just say that my 9-year-old is a lot more politically astute now than I was at the same age then!)

A growing Kraut- minority, a few Expats living in Germany :hi: and several former GIs :hi: - not to mention former Expats and other Americans (and Canadians and ...) speaking German (and they're doing so extremely well).

my mother prefers (several) former GIs as boyfrieds. so i knew, it's a nice community. and for me are two things leftover, i'am an absolut nba-fan and i don't believe every american is stupid, like so many germans ;)

And while I can't stand basketball I've learned to respect the American way of life. We had several American and British volunteers helping in the Schröder-campaign - they did great work and told their story- so I looked for a way to meet Americans like that. (And I've got a few friends in and/or from America)

But only because I remember a special report they had about the Vietnam war and they suggested small children not watch. My mother was busy cooking in the other room and had no idea I was watching.

I also remember a 25th aniversary special about the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on what I think was 60 minutes.

I wasn't very old, maybe 5 or so. No wonder I'm a bleeding heart liberal!

And when I watch reruns today, I cannot believe how cool I thought they were, and the show is nothing like I remembered it when I was five or six.

It was really slow. Months between frames.

It's been a while but the Ed Sullivan show popped in my mind first. Others that would be among my firsts - Captain Kangaroo, Wild Kingdom and the Wonderful World of Disney.

I remember goint to the neighbors to watch it because they had one of them color TV's!

It was an hour long cartoon show, with the roadrunner as well. I think it ran for several years. But to see it in color back in the late 60's was something I will never forget!

The road runner/wiley coyote segments were my favorite. Oh the good old days, LOL. And I am lucky that I have a "gadget dad" - whenever something new came out he had to get it! First color TV and then those amazing 5 button remotes!!

Captain Kangaroo had cartoon segments with Tom Terrific and his mighty dog Manfred. Hercules, Felix the Cat and American Bandstand was on every afternoon.

I can remember seeing Ryan O'Neals face, and people talking about Alison, who was missing, who I later found out was Mia Farrow.

My mom & sisters never missed it.

The square-dancing Lucky Strike cigarettes, and the three little elves singing "Ajax The Foaming Cleanser", and the M&M that jumped into the pool of chocolate to get its candy shell - - that one always freaked me out.

From the anime artist Osamau Tezuka's "Jungle Emperor" (in 1965 I think)

Disney ripped off Tezuka in a big way with the Lion King. They should be sued to oblivian for that.
In fact, it was openly discussed that the Lion King was a tribute to Tezuka. There are so many
obvious plagarisms that it is scandalous!



I also liked Daktari and remember Bewitched.

The theme music to Bewitched effects me greatly as it is the most evocative of my early childhood.
However, I LOVED KIMBA!!!

Now THERE'S a TV show I hadn't thought about for about ... ooh ... 30 years or so.

Jack Rabbit seems to be the only other person on DU that remembers this show. I was tickled that he also remembered Captain Fortune from Saturday morning children's programming in the San Francisco bay area during the 50's, a program that nobody else seems to remember. Unfortunately neither of us know who played the Captain. Any help?

Okay, so there's this woman accidentally locked inside a library overnight, and the place is haunted. The climax is when she's running down the aisles, away from this unseen thing, and the books start flying off the shelves as she runs past -- and then start flying in front of her, blocking her path. I think she ends up dead when somebody comes to open the library in the morning.

If anyone has any idea what I'm talking about, you will be solving a 40-something-year-old mystery for me, and I will be eternally grateful.

Otherwise, the earliest shows I remember watching regularly were "I Love Lucy" (ended its first run just before I was born), "Combat" & "Rat Patrol" (my dad dug 'em), "McHale's Navy," and "Bewitched" in black and white.

I also got a glimpse of "The Judy Garland Show" in 1963 or '64, before Pop switched the channel to something violent. I got to watch her sing for a moment, and she was so totally into the music, doing her usual thing with her hands, I remember asking, "Mom, what's wrong with that lady?" Mom replied, "Oh... she just has a lot of problems, dear." LOL

(I turned into a Judy fanatic years later.)

This is probably *totally* politically incorrect, but my grandfather and I were fans of Cisco and Pancho when they were on radio.

When my Grandfather was dying, my parents rented a TV so that he could watch them. It was the first television show I'd ever seen; I can't remember squat about the plots, but Cisco was just as handsome and clever as we'd imagined him, and Pancho was just as chubby and funny.

Dancing was always better than listening to Captain Kangaroo.

and I guess that later on I watched whatever cartoons they were showing at that hour of the morning, plus "Captain Kangaroo." I know I must have watched TV before that (the above memory is from the early '60s), but I can't recall what I saw earlier.

my mom did too! I think she did it more for Jack in his skin tight body suit as I never saw her do any exercise. Yeah - that's one of the first I remember too.

and used it to work out with Jack. It was like a rubber jump rope. LOL!

By the way, did you read in the New York Times that "Miss Frances" died a few weeks ago at the age of 94?

market. Could be that show you recall. Did stuff like magic, though I remember him as bald and kind of creepy with glasses. I think it was even in black and white. My uncle who lived in a small town about 30 miles from Cedar Rapids told me years later a funny Dr Max story. Seems Dr Max really hated the turn his life had taken. Doing magic on tv for a bunch of snotty kids and introducing cartoons was not his dream job. He would drive to my uncle's town, where he wasn't as well known and get stinking drunk in the bar across from the Post Office where my uncle worked. Every afternoon they would watch the folks in the bar pour Uncle Max out of the bar and into his car so that he could go into Cedar Rapids and do his kids show - bombed out of his mind. I guess they didn't subscribe to the friends don't let friends drive drunk thingy back then...

Myself? I rememeber sitting in front of the test pattern in my jammies waiting for ANYTHING to come on. What that anything was escapes me.

I loved that show. I still think the opening theme is the greatest ever for a television show. I remember my sister calling it "Why Fee-Fie-Foe" in her toddler English.

I used to kiss the b&w TV screen when Lassie came on.

Willie the Worm. I think it was a local show and it was out of Philadelphia. It was a worm handpuppet. He introduced cartoons and put on little handpuppet skits. The cartoons were really old ones, in black and white from the 1930's. The cartoon that always comes back to me is one where all the barnyard animals were having a jam session in the barn and the barn was expanding and the roof was jumping up and down to the music. They don't make cartoons like THAT any more.

Then, of course, there was Uncle Milty, but I didn't like that one too much. I preferred the cartoons. Then Ed Sullivan. After that there was Bandstand - the original Bandstand. I've forgotten the hosts, but one was arrested for messing with the teenaged girls on the show. Dick Clark came after that. Oh, and by the way, Dick Clark used to be an announcer on the radio in Philadelphia, before Bandstand. He played big band music and claimed he hated rock and roll.

Am I dating myself yet?
