LMAO I just heard a nun call Jr stupid
so I"m listening to Morning Edition on the way into work... and they are doing a story about this group of Nuns that have been praying peoples requests, and their own, round the clock for 125 years. In the conversation it comes up that they are busier lately. Partially due to the 125 year publicity, and partially due to people requesting prayers for a job, or loved one home from Iraq. So this nun comes out with "And I've been doing ALOT or praying for President Bush, Alot", and proceeds to basically call him sincere but stupid (mentioning both the war and tax policy), in so many words. "He works with what he was given" LOL It was the funniest thing I've heard in some time.

1. THIS may seem stupid but does anyone know, do nuns and priests, etc
vote? If so, do they vote the way they are told to or are they free to vote their own choice?

3. Yes, they vote
And they vote the way they want, just like people. Growing up in parochial schools, it was always my impression that nuns and priests tended to be liberal. The church itself is on most things. It's when you get to the area of human reproduction that they get conservative but even in that they aren't monolithic.

7. Nuns, priests and politics.
When I was a kid, "Catholic Republican" was practically an oxymoron, though my parents, both devout Catholics, were also faithful Republicans, though Mom did split her ballot on at least one occasion. :-)

Anyway, over the years, I encountered more than a few nuns and priests who were crusaders for social justice. These are the people who got/get arrested at the School of the Americas, antiwar demonstrations, etc. I even knew of friars who put on their habits and showed up at Lafayette Park (opposite the White House) for the antiwar demonstrations during the FIRST Gulf War.

In recent years, I've had more than a few opportunities to hear right-wing rhetoric from Catholic clergy and laity, and I hate the way my local bishop has cozied up to the Bush White House. Still, the general stance of the Catholic Church is progressive on many issues -- poverty, human rights, etc. We sing, "The Lord hears the cry of the poor" at church, not the Bush mantra of "the Lord hears the cry of the rich."

8. My Aunt was a nun...
Until they dragged her kicking and screaming from St Patricks Cathedral for protesting the Viet Nam War. She's more liberal than I am.

9. Yes, they vote
Those who are eligible, at any rate. Many of the Catholic clergy at the school where I teach are from Ireland, Europe or most frequently, Latin America.

Every priest I know well is a liberal and a social progressive. The local cardinal and two bishops are conservative.
