Poll question: What movie do you suggest for the SO and me?
We don't always have the chance to catch a Friday night movie, but luck has it we are kidless tonight. Frankly, the list of movies available locally looks awful, but, I am hoping hte good folks of DU can help me out in selecting a halfway decent movie. What's your choice? My wife likes romantic comedy best. I prefer something with some teeth, but it has to be well-made.

If none of these, any rental ideas? Thanks!

9. Good all around movie...

Action so well done that it didn't need over the top violence and gore.

Very humorous. Well edited. Good plot.

Cute leading guys (my wife says). Cute leading female (onehandle says), who some will recognize from "Bend it Like Beckham" (another excellent movie).

And of course, Skeleton Pirates. How can you go wrong with Skeleton Pirates?

22. I totally enjoyed Pirates, but really--mediocre movie without Johnny
Am I correct? Johnny Depp stepped into a routine kids movie and made it hilarious.

It does make you severely weepy though. One box of tissues isn't enough for me.

then you have to bury your face against your partner's shoulder
and sob into his/her shirt. Takes care of the tears AND builds intimacy.

14. If you decide to rent instead...
...try "Bringing Up Baby," "Holiday," "The Philadelphia Story," "Arsenic and Old Lace," or "His Girl Friday."

That's if you need a Cary Grant fix. :-)

I second the suggestion above to rent "Truly Madly Deeply," though I would caution that it's a most unusual romantic drama. Excellent cast, though.

And it's never a bad time to see "The Big Sleep" or "To Have and Have Not," with Bogart and Bacall. Great dialogue and chemistry there.

And if you want a romantic comedy from the last 30 years, go for "Gregory's Girl," "The Good-bye Girl," "Crossing Delancey," "When Harry Met Sally," "Eat Drink Man Woman," or "Sense and Sensibility."

And one of the best movies I've seen in the last 10 years is the Japanese romantic comedy "Shall We Dance?" It is utterly charming and witty.

17. Great ideas!
thanks.
Gregory's Girl, I loved that movie. Used to be on a kick by films of that director. Saw That Sinking Feeling (wonderfully off beat), local Hero, and uh, shoot, something else. Shall We Dance sounds intriguing.

18. Solaris is intense, romantic and beautiful (RENT IT)
And my SO loves to look at George Clooney.

It is a little creepy, but ultimately I found it very spiritual and heartwarming and mysterious.
