10. it is Spanish or Portuguese which I am not
But I was the only child born in TX and my father liked it ( I guess it was probably a name some local women had)so he gave it to me.

The meaning is uncertain, but it could be derived from Greek theros "summer", from Greek therizein "to harvest"

19. First name is Hebrew, last name is Scottish
My first name means "snare" or "yoke." Gotta love it. :(

My last name is May, and means, well, the month of May! Or, if I believe that website, it harkens back to some Roman goddess or other. I know there's an island off the coast of Scotland at Edinburgh named May Island where my Viking ancestors settled and began intermarrying with the Scots. Which is why I have red hair and a fiery temper.

Look out for the next pillaging campaign! :)

26. Beloved
Edited on Fri Aug-29-03 07:04 PM by Rabrrrrrr
My partner gave me a ring with the song of solomon verse "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine" in Hebrew; when I took it out of the box and read it, I thought at first she'd had it custom made for me and I was all excited and thinking, "Wow - what a gift! Went to all the trouble to find someone who can do Hebrew, and use my name!". :-) Sadly, after a few moments I realized she didn't, but she knew exactly what I'd have wanted, and I will always cherish that ring and love wearing it (because to me, it does use my name, and only incidentally means beloved) :-)

...I don't know what my first name means in Finnish, but my last name (Gurkanlar) is the Turkish pluralisation of a first name (i.e. Andrews, Stevens, Peters, etc.) Gurkan is the first name, and "lar" is the plural suffix.

45. The "S" is not Plural Form
Names like Andrews don't mean "many called Andrew" but "Andrew's Son." I don't know all the Finnish naming formalities, but it does follow adding "son" to the father's name for men's names, and "dotter" to father's name for women. Bastards used to, and may still, take their mother's name plus "son" or "dotter" ("Olgasson"). For some reason, the Swedish "son" and "dotter" was used for many written records, and the Finnish "poika" (son) and "tytär" (daughter) used in others.

Welsh names changed from ap+name (ap Evan, ap Owen, ap Robert) to Evans (or Bevan), Owens (or Bowen) and Probert (or Roberts) when Anglicized.
