...i'll be leaving texas very soon and i have a lot of nice furniture and other home furnishings that i won't be able to take with me. basically, i'm leaving the country at some point in the near future and i'll be selling just about everything i have.

At any rate, Texas will begin to tilt democratic before the end of this decade. Anglo population isn't growing much, most of the people who remembered the depression are already dead, and the Latino population will explode.

And we've got more tropical birds than they do.

it's probable that we get a wider variety of migratory species through here than florida does since we are the funnel for the eastern and western species to get down into mexico and central and south america. but, i doubt we have more tropical species in texas than they do in florida.

Here's the predominantly tropical, birds that regularly occur in at least some numbers in Florida and Texas (but not both). I'll even cut out western Texas (everything west of I-35) to eliminate the effect of Texas' greater size.

Florida (18):Masked Booby,Brown Booby, Snail Kite, Short Tailed Hawk, Limpkin, Brown Noddy, WhiteCrowned Pigeon, Mangrove Cuckoo, Smooth billed Ani, Antillean Nighthawk, Black Whiskered Vireo, Shiny Cowbird, Spot-breasted Oriole, and (liberally counting) five species of self-sufficient parrot populations introduced from elsewhere (the only native parrot in Florida is extinct).

This is a rough list I put together merely by reading through a list of North American birds. I'm sure there's a few omissions, but the outcome's probably going to be the same.

....i never would have guessed that texas had more established tropical birds than florida. i guess because we're butted up to mexico we have more of a chance of southern species expanding their range northward by following the land mass. while florida does have a good number of carribean species finding their way in over the atlantic, i'd imagine a good portion of florida's established exotic populations started out from pet store escapees, etc.

the lists you provided could be a bit suspect, though. for example, there's no doubt that muscovy ducks are well established in south florida. but, overall, i'm sure you are right. it's great to find other people interested in this sort of thing. what part of texas are you in?

There's a population of Muscovy in Northern Mexico that extends north to the Rio Bravo/Grande. They're wild Muscovy, unlike the ducks that populate ponds with a significant human presence (which are descended from previously domesticated Muscovy). The wild Muscovy Ducks, which look a little different, are actually quite shy. Florida has no wild populations of Muscovy, and the domesticated type generally are unable to successfully colonize areas without the continuing presence and support of humans.

Thanks for the link. The one thing I will say about Florida is that there are a huge number of strange pets that people keep, and the variety of escaped animals, particularly reptiles and birds, is amazing. It's similar to the large game diversity in the western Hill Country (e.g. Axis Deer, Aoudad, Nilgai). Well, except that people don't raise parrots and chameleons for other people to come and shoot.

entitled something like "the effects of man on the south florida herpetofauna"? it's about all the exotic reptile and amphibian species that have been released into the environment there. when i lived in miami i knew where there were breeding populations of green iguanas, ctenosaurus similis (spiny tailed iguanas), basiliscus basiliscus, basiliscus vittatus, basiliscus plumifrons, and dozens of other exotic species of anoles, skinks, geckoes and assorted lizards.

it was like living in a central american rainforest.

I lived in Miami and Naples for several years.

The current Peterson Guide to Eastern Reptiles and Amphibians really shows the extent of established herps in South Florida. (If you haven't seen the current guide they've got out, it's put together very well, and covers all of Texas, including the Trans-Pecos).

the cuban knight anole is what it sounds like you might have had. they're all over miami.

i don't have the latest peterson guide but i've looked through it. pretty cool.

in miami, at the site of the old crandon park zoo on key biscayne you can walk along the trails. last time i was there (a few years ago) i saw the highest population density of green iguanas i've ever seen anywhere. they were dropping from the trees by the dozens and crashing into the canal below as i walked along the trail .
