Is Beer bad for cats?
My cat Maisy last year when I was watching Iowa hand Michigan it's ass. I had a glass of Warstiener beer right beside me. She came right up to it and started drinking out of it, just dunked her head right in it. I immedeatly shoed her away and had a laugh at the fact that a cat likes to drink beer. When she drinks water she dips her paw in it and licks it off but, when she drank my beer just dunked her head right in there.

2. Certainly don't let them drive!
Seriously, alcohol isn't good for animals-they don't like to be impaired--particularly cats.

7. Yeah, I've noticed that about cats...
... in my younger and dumber days I "experimented" (not with alcohol, but with something else) and felt terrible when I saw how confused and frightened my cat was for a while. I'll never do that one again.

However, the dog I grew up with (best dog to ever live) seemed to love alcohol, especially red wine. He'd get piss drunk, chase his tail for a while, and have an all around wonderful time.

23. Yeah... I felt terrible...
I really loved Fart and had no malintent, although I may have been rather careless.

So, anyway, now not only do I not do that any more, but I've loudly protested against others doing it on 1 or 2 occasions, as well.

Poor kitties...

Oh, here's a pic of Fart, btw:

And here's Georgette w/Fart:

Fart is no longer with us :( but Georgie is a very spry 18.5 years old now. Had her for about 2/3 of my life.

26. It was short for Fahrvergnügen.
My mom called her "Farfie" for short, and I called her "Fart". I think we both agreed that "Fart" was a more fitting name; she just wasn't willing to use it.

28. Why? Did the cat have a flatulence problem?
I know some dogs with nasty farts, but never have met a cat with such a problem. Of course they more than make up for it with the litterbox.

30. Hehe... well, actually she did...
... but beyond that, she was just such a "little fart" that it fit.

One of my fave cats ever...

4. I don't know about cats...
But you've reminded me of a Lab we had years ago who was a real alcoholic. She'd sneak up on an open bottle of beer, knock it over, and guzzle as much as she could before she got caught. She also loved screwdrivers.

I've heard about other alcohol-loving dogs, but never a cat. I guess it's safe to say you have an odd feline? :D

8. I'm not getting the cat drunk
Edited on Sun Aug-31-03 05:16 PM by sasquatch
I'm not wasting money on Warstiener beer so I can get the cat drunk on purpose. If I wanted to get her drunk on purpose I would buy something cheap like Old Milwaukee

If you loved Maisy, you'd get her something better than Old Milwaukee. That stuff is just foul!

27. HEY!!!
My cats are smarter than a large part of the human population. They read DU, and take great umbrage at your classification of cats as "dumb animals". If they were visiting your house, they told me they'd pee on your keyboard for posting such a slandarous and specist comment.

15. alcohol is toxic for animals.
I would watch out here. I had a 'friend' who thought it
was funny to get his dog drunk. That dog suffered some
awful health problems.

24. Good point.
And I guess it's all a matter of how different chemicals interact with different biochemistries.

Lots of intoxicants that humans love will just make cats feel sick, paranoid, frightened, weak, etc.

Heck, some of these things don't even have the same effect from human to human.

17. When I was a kid we had a rabbit
who was a mean drunk! My father home-brewed wine, and this rabbit would get into the wine and then go around biting people. I still have scars.

Never been bit by a Rabbit before but, if it leaves scars they must bite really hard.

19. They're essentially rodents,
with very sharp teeth. Blackie (the wino rabbit) was mean even when sober. I'm not sure what eventually happened to him. I think my parents gave him away to some farmer who made rabbit stew of him.

He drinks out of his water dish with his paw like yours and he likes beer. I never let him have any but if I'm not careful, he'll lick the bottle when I'm done.
