I was wondering about what category 'the sleep function' would be in? I expect that it would be a symptom of either the nervous system or the endocrine system. I looked it up, and it would seem most likely a function of the nervous system (central nervous system?)
Here is a quote from NINDS - part of the National Institutes of Health:
"Nerve-signaling chemicals called neurotransmitters control whether we are asleep or awake by acting on different groups of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain. Neurons in the brainstem, which connects the brain with the spinal cord, produce neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine that keep some parts of the brain active while we are awake. Other neurons at the base of the brain begin signaling when we fall asleep"
http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/brain_basics/understanding_sleep_brain_basic.htm I only give another view of this kind of ailment that may also part of the nervous system damage by those exposed to 2-butoxyethanol. It is a common chemical found in paint, household and work cleaning products, etc.
It is also a neurotoxin that the first gulf war vets were exposed to (in gun cleaner, jet fuel additive, kerosene?) and would fit in the list of central nervous system damage along these lines:
Short term memory loss
Difficulty concentrating
Depression
Suicidal tendencies
Extreme irritability
Difficulty sleeping
I recently learned that 'gulf war syndrome' vets have been also been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. www.gulfwarvets.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000271.html I actually suspect that this ethylene glycol monobutyl ether is the most probable cause of 'gulf war syndrome' but it has not been studied.
Realize that a strong exposure to this chemical will look like a flu-attack. But if people double check what they were doing 15 minutes before that was different than ususal, you can usually pinpoint the source of exposure. Many times eyes are burning and hurting, urine turns dark, and a fatigue. The chemical causes hemolytic anemia which is compensated at first ... maybe for many years ... with the bone marrow making red blood cells at an accelerated rate. Ask you doctor to check more in the area of the red blood cells.
And you may want to keep a copy of all your blood results and urinalysis and track what is normal for you over time. Is there a trend of red blood cell counts dropping?

Why I'm looking into this chemical exposure
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=2790107&mesg_id=2791391Check for what products contain 2-butoxyethanol
(CAS Registry Number: 000111-76-2)
in the Household Products Data Base
http://hpd.nlm.nih.gov/ingredients.htm 5% concentration is not safe for home use, per one expert in product development.
(So probably half that concentration for double strength)
Also check for the complex version Diethylene glycol monobutyl ether or 2-2-butoxyethanol
(CAS Registry Number: 000112-34-5)
