1. If I had 50k to waste, I'd like to have another Mariko...
She was a good kitty.

14. I'd do the same for my Boy, who died young (8) of cancer last year
even though there is this gargantuan overpopulation of cats. Boy was a stray I took in and so are my other cats.

15. Yeah...Xantha, Sybil, Tonka, and Logan are all strays I took in..
...and Mischief is an adoptee from the shelter.

2. Why the hell do that when there is already an overpopulation problem...
There are a lot of cats, NOW that need a good home, otherwise many will be destroyed, so this is a bad idea, no matter how one looks at it. Not to mention the less than perfect method of cloning which can lead to medical problems in these newly born defenseless kittens.

3. I wouldn't pay $5 for a cat.
Now a dog, on the other hand . . .

4. Those had better be some tastey cats.
It's really too bad that all cats lost the ability to breed.

I was wondering when they would make cuter kittens, they've been pretty ugly as of late.

10. What an incredible cat. I would match the cost to a donation,
maybe times three or something. I would love to have my Pagan, Beau, Andrew, Spike and Gretchen back. I loved them so.

8. this is a horribly sad comment on todays greedy wealthy
how many homeless kids could be fed clothed and housed for 50,000 dollars.

11. I can't help but think what good that money could have done, but
I don't have any particular ethical issues with the cloning issue. Just a bloody stupid thing IMO.

12. We saw a great bumper sticker this week:
DON'T BREED OR BUY
while shelter animals die

says it all.

19. well this is SO true. Still if I could have my Boy "back'..... He was
my child and I think I loved and still love him as much as if I had a child. I wouldn't tell a parent whose child died to go adopt some baby since there are kids who need adoption, and I feel the same about my cats. I have taken in stray cats for 40 years and every stray deserves a warm loving home.

13. There are dozens of homeless cats in my neighborhood. They're cute, too.
They are also freezing, hungry, and sentenced to a very short and hard life.

If you are in mourning, put a memorial of your cat together, then adopt a new cat. If you have 50k to blow, and you are driven to blow it on cats, donate that money to a no-kill shelter like the one FlamingYouth has linked on her sig line. It's the only ethical thing to do.

16. Bet they still taste like chicken...
Seriously though, it's a sad statement of how fucked up things are when people will drop that kind of money on a cat.

17. you'll never get the same cat back
The new cat will be a completely different individual as far as his mind is concerned. And given a certain feline genetic peculiarity, a cat clone will not necessarily resemble the original physically, even.

Basically, you're just spending $50,000 to acquire a new and different cat, albeit one who shares the dear departed's genetic material.

Although I can totally understand wanting to pay any price to resurrect a beloved animal friend.

18. hey! it'd be bizarre
but I'd love to see a copy of my avatar kitty. And the other kitties and the dog that populated my life.

But really, there are so many sweet homeless animals that need moms and dads, that'd be selfish.
