You said I only had 8 seconds left to think of something. My creative mind simply does not work that fast, so I went to my default.

Eleven years ago, when I first signed up for Players Plus with NTN, I had to register a name. The game was about to start, and my friends said to just hurry up and pick a name! The first name that popped into my head was that of my daughter - Kayla. It stuck. Years later, I thought about changing my trivia name, but I already had a reputation as Kayla, so I've stuck with it.

Anyway...that makes "Kayla" my default for "You only have a few seconds! PICK SOMETHING!" :D

I needed college money, so I joined the Marines. It was April 1974 and I was to graduate the following May. The war in Vietnam was over and I figured it was rather "safe" to join the Marines. Not only would I receive the GI Bill, there was also a cash bonus ($2500) if one joined the combat arms (infantry, armor or field artillery). Since I wanted to go to college I accepted this deal.

No one ever told me how much time Marines spend at sea in one of these assignments. I served for six years and over the course of this time I was on five ships (total: 483 days at sea). While at sea, Marines can become a bit stir-crazy because there is not much for them to do except daily routine assignments (more like chores). We would spend extended amounts of time at sea (three to six month assignments) and nothing on board ship ever changes: the scenery is always the same....

The "old salts" played a game called "gross out" which was intended to intimidate the newbies, of which I was one during this particular incident. The players all ante five dollars and the last one in the game wins; one may quit freely at any time. I was dared into the game and... I won.


Concerning the comment about the STDs... Most of the people to whom I have told this story ask me if the thought of STDs ever crossed my mind as I did this. That's all.

I wouldn't be speaking to my kids today (or probably half my friends, for that matter). Guess you have to come up with games to stave off the boredom, eh? I'm wondering if that was the grossest it ever got, though. I can think of things that would be ten thousand B***'s worse.

I suppose as a "newb" you earned some well-deserved respect that day.

About the STD's...since the S stands for Sexually, it didn't seem right not to joke about it.
