Poll question: Better Trilogy: Lord of the Rings or The Godfather
Now, the Godfather and its first sequel are arguably two of the top-10 greatest movies ever made, but the third movie sucked giant meatballs.

Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time, and that quality held throughout all three films.

Taking into account all THREE films as one package - which trilogy was better?

5. The 3rd one would have been alright
except for Sophia Coppola and the relationship she has in the movie.

36. Sophia Coppola was dreadful but
the whole plot, storyline, etc. in GIII sucked. The characters made no sense compared to what they had been in the first 2 G movies. No explanation, as I recall, of why Diane Keaton was back in the family, and Connie's character changed a lot. No explanation of these changes was given. And S. Coppola playing a perky, sexy 20-something? Gak! (Part was originally to go to W. Ryder, who probably would have been good for that part).

I can watch all 12 hours of the LOTR series nonstop, every day, for the rest of my life, and never get tired.

Guess which trilogy I voted for. ;)

34. Godfather III
was total shit.

The other two are great pieces of work.

I'm about the biggest LOTR fan you'll find, but before I saw the LOTR trilogy, the first two Godfather films were my favorities.

Granted the two are in different categories but I think they all convey a great story. IMO, the first two Godfather films, and the LOTR trilogy is what movies are all about.

simply because of how bad GF3 was.

Nice pic of Vince, btw. Hope he stays healthy for you. We were sick of him here in Toronto.

20. No question-LOTR
LOTR is a better book series than Puzo's Godfather. Just not a comparison and while the Godfather movies may be good I still say LOTR because the third godfather was a significant dropoff

23. 2 outstanding films and 1 dog beats three very good movies
love LOTR, watched all three director's cuts this weekend, (finally showed the routing of the corsairs too!) but Godfather I & II? filmmaking at its very best.

the pyschological depth and acting cast of GF I & II make them superior to peter jackson's excellent visual rendition and tour de force CG effects of a 12 hour fairy tale, albeit, the most read of the 20th century.

i place GF I alongside casablanca and citizen kane as the best films made. in each film, the acting, writing, and directing is magnificent.

35. I'm not going to argue
Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 10:19 AM by fujiyama
that the first two Godfather films are among the very best. They are.

But I still think that in terms of the material they were adapted from, the LOTR is a better story. It's more complex and intricate.

Granted, in this case, we can give Copalla his due because he took what was a decent, but not so spectacular book (I thought this was a rare case where the films were much better than the book), and made it such a spectacular film.

Either way, this is one of those polls where I have such a tough time voting because I'm such a big fan of all 5 films.

24. Lord of the Rings!
Lord of the Rings is much more to my liking.

Get the extended version of "Return of the King" (4 hours long!)

I find stuff like the Godfather somewhat depressing.
It's like if Frodo puts on the Ring and turns into Sauron.

26. Godfather. Not even close.
I & II were two of the best films ever made. I sat through LOTR I and I suppose if you like that type of movie you'd rate it high. To me it was like watching paint dry.

30. First two Godfather films are great
The last one drags its quality down as a trilogy.

As for LOTR, I'm a real fan. The films were consistant in quality and IMO it's the greatest trilogy. Partly because it's really one really big movie.

Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 10:09 AM by kick-ass-bob
It would have won.

#3 pulled it down.

I like both series - so no fantasy bias (either direction) from me.

32. The Godfather is extraordinarily overrated.
Poorly paced, poorly directed, poorly acted - but worst of all, deadly, deadly dull. All three movies are down there with Showgirls among the absolute biggest wastes of celluloid ever.
