my 8 year old niece -- I'm just bragging
this is a letter my sister received from my niece's teacher... My niece turns 8 yrs old on Sunday

the letter:

I wanted to drop you a note about a story that Sarah wrote so that when you see it, you will understand what a GREAT job she did.

During our Language Arts time, sometimes when I am working with a small group of kids, the other students are doing a variety of
activities/centers. One of our centers is a writing center. Recently
in the writing center we had an activity called "Stamping Stories". To do this activity, the students could choose from a selection of about 30 rubber stamps. They choose the stamps that they want and then write a story using the pictures they have stamped on their paper. This is a totally self directed activity.

Sarah chose a picture of a zebra, a horse, and a violin. (What a
surprise that animals were her choice!) Here is the text of her story:

The horse was playing lovely music. The zebra was jealous, and the zebra said, "Can I play too?" And they both played lovely music together. The end.

The story is not very long, but I couldn't help but notice her fabulous word choice (lovely, jealous) and that even in a few short sentences she managed to create a problem and a resolution (both critical elements in a good story).

I just wanted you to realize that she had absolutely no direction from me, that the pictures and ideas were all her own. I think the story also speaks to what a beautiful, gentle soul she has. She is such a delight! I just wanted you to know. Have a great day!

1. aren't they beautiful at that age? This is a wonderful story. Save it.
I doubt that it will be the last quality sweet thing she creates.
