Nearly famous has "near-death experience" with mattress

Aaron Carter's Smash Hit
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/eo/15655

The popster narrowly averted serious injury after his car exploded following a run-in with a wayward mattress on a Florida highway Thursday at about 12:30 a.m.

According to his publicist, Brad Zeifman, the mattress flew off a flatbed cargo truck in front of Carter's 2004 Cadillac Escalade.

The 17-year-old was unable to avoid the bedding and ran over it. The mattress became lodged underneath the SUV and caught fire, in turn igniting the vehicle.

"Everything happened in such a whirlwind," Carter said in a statement Thursday. "It was like the mattress flew out of nowhere. You think you're invincible when you're behind the steering wheel of an SUV but you're not. I'm okay but you can imagine I'm still in shock."

The singer sustained only minor "bumps and bruises" from the crash, but still called the wreck a "near-death experience."

4. Something like this happened to me once..
I was on Rt 22 in PA when a woven hamper type basket fell out of a truck in front of me. I couldn't swerve or I would have hit someone..and it happened so quickly that I ran over it. It got stuck under my car....but as soon as I could I pulled off the road to dislodge it. I didn't continue to drive with it under my car because if I had it would have flown back and hit someone else...which wouldn't be the neighborly thing to do.

Perhaps I am crazy but what are they making mattresses out of that it caught on fire so quickly, or what is wrong with this car that it ignited it?

I had a somewhat flexible straw basket lodged under my car and it didn't ignite, but if I had kept driving the friction against the road surface may have caused it to do so...

5. Yeah I was wondering how a mattress could catch fire
I would guess that the padding got worn away and the springs started to spark against the pavement.

8. Do you regularly drive around Florida with a mattress on your roof
looking for celebrities?

If so, don't give up don't ever give up.

12. There must have been a southerner passing through
You see that all the time around here. It's sort of a community thing, you know in case the truck breaks down and you need to keep the longnecks cold until your cousin gets there with his "Dooley".

15. From the NY Times article:
"Carter, who is still feuding with his mother and has yet to call her about the accident, mysteriously issued this statement: "I am so lucky to be alive right now. I can't believe I survived another near-death experience — I feel like I am a cat and I only have five lives left!"

Someone needs to try 5 more times!
