Who is the best TV sports announcer?
Not a poll, because I could not do this one justice.

my vote: Dan Bonner, college basketball. He explains the game instead of fawning over dunks.

1. Always used to like Vince Skully (sp?).
Considered him to be baseball's renaissance man.

22. Vin Scully reads lips - very entertaining for the on-field arguments
Edited on Mon Jan-10-05 11:42 AM by Richardo
One time (paraphrase) during an argument between Lasorda and some umpire: "They appear to be discussing philosophy down there - talking about Voltaire, Kafka and BALLLLLLLLLzac!" :D

27. A great flub, too. I laughed hard.
Do you know of the outburst by the Philadelphia hockey announcer responding to a questionable call on a goal?

I think he started shouting -- on the air -- "It hit the post! It hit the fuckin' post!!"

3. I am going to get flamed for this one
but I always enjoyed when Bob Costas called baseball games. He knows the sport and truly loves it.

28. Costas is the WORST
Edited on Mon Jan-10-05 08:11 PM by ZombyWoof
An unctious, smarmy, piece of shit if there ever was one. Has to relate EVERYTHING to the Yankees. Hosted a "Frasier" special once, and called it the "Yankees of sitcoms". :puke: Fawns and drools on them when calling games they aren't even in! He doesn't even wipe his chin when he sucks off Steinbrenner.

But even minus the endless sucking off of Yankee cock, he is a fake piece of shit asshole. FUCK COSTAS.

Be aware, I am ONLY flaming Costas. I never flame anyone on DU just for having poor judgment. ;-)

21. really? I think he used to be better, but has gone downhill
I can't think of any examples, but I think they could get someone else that would fit better.

I've also noticed that Jon has gotten quite annoyed with some things Morgan has said.

18. I've always been a fan (read: homer) of
Pittsburgh announcers Mike Lange (Pens), Myron Cope (Steelers), and Lanny Fraterre (Pirates). All are guys who are very knowledgeable about the games, have great speaking skills (well, we'll give Myron the benefit of the doubt), and have great anectodes about their respective teams and the city of Pittsburgh.

Nationally, I've always been a fan of Keith Jackson, Jon Miller, and Will McDonough, when he did football.

I gotta give a pop to Breenie...I've been a Knicks fan all my life and I think he is simply the best, most well prepared, eloquent, businesslike, entertaining broadcaster out there, and this comes from someone who wants to be a sportscaster himself :-).

The voice of the Mariners since their first game in April 1977. MY OH MY!

Kevin Calabro for the Sonics basketball games too. Great voice, great pacing, well-turned, entertaining phrases, and knowledge of the game.
