Good news--- the clown who hit me just plead guilty!

I don't know if you remember, but last spring I was called to break up a bar fight and this guy blindsided me with a heavy glass beer mug to the face, leaving me with a fractured orbit and a laceration to the eyebrow that needed 11 stitches to close. He was charged with several offenses, the most serious being aggravated battery on a police officer--- a very serious felony in Illinois, with mandatory prison time.

His attorney has been attempting to negotiate a plea with the States' Attorney's office, without success; hoping that a new SA would agree to reduce the charge, the attorney has managed to successfully delay a trial by various legal maneuvers until the newly-elected SA took office last month. At his 'status hearing' this afternoon, the new SA told this man's attorney in no uncertain terms that his options were two: a.) go to trial and risk a conviction or b.) enter an open plea of guilty, and the SA would not ask for an extended prison sentence, even though he was eligible for one because of previous felony convictions.

He chose 'b.)', and his sentencing is scheduled for next month, and he was taken into custody immediately, pending sentencing.

I was a deputy sheriff, although I'm now on a leave of absence to attend law school.

Are you planning on doing prosecutor work when you finish law school, or doing another area of law entirely?

I could see myself as either an assisant SA or AG, or a public defender for a few years, just to get some experience under my belt first.

I've known of one instance where an officer was hit semi-by-accident, but that's it. In Ilinois, if you hit a cop, you WILL go to jail/prison, 99% of the time.

I'm pretty easy-going about a lot of things, but attacks on LE officers, firemen and paramedics, etc., are a BIG no-no in my book.

particularly when most try to avoid violence. My husband calls the police "social workers with guns."

I think of us as 'societal paramedics', because we're almost always the first folks called to deal with something truly awful.

perspective on the law. It never hurts to have a practical perspective on how the law is carried out.

and I'm glad your injuries healed. My wife once got blindsided in the cheekbone, but with a hockey puck. It took 19 stitches to close her wound and, after a year you could barely see a mark on her face. I watched the guy sew her up in the emergency room; he was so meticulous. I think he performed a miracle the way there's hardly any scar to be seen on her. With us guys it's different; we wear our scars proudly, eh.

I realize that hise impending incarceration won't heal your eye, and there's a part of me that hates to say this, but...
