22. Robbins hit the trifecta with that movie:
He wrote, directed and starred in that movie. He even wrote the songs he sang in the movie, but refuses to put a soundtrack out for it since he didn't want the songs to be used outside the context of the movie (they are very very neo-con idiotic lyrics).

I also think that was a breakout performance for Jack Black who played the son of the Mayor of Harrisburg PA who was like stalker obsessed in a freeperish way for Bob Roberts (ironically the real Mayor of Harrisburg during that time is a democrat and rumor has it possibly gay)

3. The American President.
Even my Republican wife loves it.

Fave quotes:

"The American people, for reasons passing understanding, aren't able to relate guns to gun-related crime."

"It's not only our right, it's our DUTY to question our leaders. The people want leadership, sir. They're so thirsty for it, they'll crawl through the desert to a mirage for it. And when they get there and find there's no water, they'll drink the sand!

No. They'll drink the sand, not because they're thirsty. They'll drink it because they don't know the difference."

Aaron Sorkin, baby. One of the best screenwriters in the world today!

8. Either The Last Supper or Bob Roberts
It's a tossup between 'The Last Supper' (if that can indeed be called a "liberal" movie, I've never been quite sure about that one...) and 'Bob Roberts' (which freaks me out every time I see it).

11. "Paths of Glory"
As anti-war as they come, and anti-right wing. A heartbreaking appeal for justice and fair treatment for all classes.

Kubrick at the top of his powers, and a very strong performance by Kirk Douglas.

16. Dead Man
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 12:15 PM by supernova
by Jim Jarmusch. Black and White film starring Johnny Depp and Gary Farmer.

Young neophye guy takes the train from Cleveland to Machine (somewhere Out West), thinking he has an accountant's job waiting for him at a foundry. When he finally arrives, the job is aleady taken and things go rapidly downhill for him in very tragic ways. But the ending is very uplifting.

DM is an old west allegory using the poetry of William Blake. Everything relates back to William Blake. OMG! This film haunts me! It's like peeling back the layers of an onion. Deeper, and deeper, and deeper...

edit: spelling, and oh the way-too-cool soundtrack is by Neil Young.

21. amen, Miss Millie
I loved "The Contender." It always makes me feel better.
I saw it for the first time in Florida, in November of 2000, just after the election. I cheered(to the consternation of my companions)when I read the dedication at the end of the movie.

Jeff Bridges was a great president.

30. Dead Poets Society and Braveheart
DPS for confronting existential challenges and post-enlightenment paradigms in high school classrooms; basically teaching life what you make of it, that we are all on a stage, and contribute a verse, and to make an impact in whatever way we can, Carpe Diem, etc. etc.

Braveheart for illustrating the power of community and resistance, fighting against the higher social classes and tyrannical imperial powers

34. Matewan by John Sayles
Here is a blurb....

Well-intentioned labor leader Joe Kenehan (Chris Cooper) arrives in Matewan, West Virginia, intending to unionize the men and women of this company town. But his efforts to organize the workers of the Stone Mountain Coal Company ignite a powder keg of racial hostility, corruption and betrayal -- and touch off one of the most violent incidents in the history of the Coal Wars of 1920-21.

I also like Reds starring Warren Beatty....awesome movie!!!

Available for rent from Netflix!!
