2. First game? Just enjoy it.
There's a TON to really look for... I guess the first thing I'd look at is how the teams move the puck around on offense and the movements they take to try to open up lanes to the net. Outside of that, just take some time to truly appreciate how skilled these players are as they skate at full speed on ice, completely controlled while in a hostile environment.

5. What Vash said!
Don't try to figure out the rules; just cheer for your team. Its really a pretty neat sport to watch. Also, you have to get a team ballcap and a program to read up on the rules after the game.

6. Ha
I went to my first hockey game in last years Stanley Cup playoffs.

It was the home Lightning vs my brother's beloved New York Islanders.

A fight broke out in the restroom after the game over whether or not Mike Bossy was, in fact, better than the entire Tampa Bay team...

Oh, and in case my brother reads this: yes, Alexei Yashin is a huge honkin' CUPCAKE :)

Have fun!

8. Keep your eyes on the puck at all times
The lovely frozen things tend to fly into the seats at unpredictable intervals and freakishly high speeds. My sister barely ducked one a few years ago.

That said, if your seats are close enough to the ice that you're behind the glass, you should be okay.

Enjoy! :)

15. That's actually not a good idea (and hard to do anyways)
What you should do is watch WHO has the puck and try and anticipate where it is headed next- who will it be passed to? Will a shot on goal be taken?
It's a great game.

9. ooooh, so many things !!
Hockey is pretty much just like soccer, but on ice.

Watch how the plays are set up. Many people say 'just watch the puck' but I think if you do that, you miss the bigger picture of who's where and how they're positioning themselves to get the puck or set up a defense.

I like to watch skating styles myself - some guys are like rhino's on skates and others are so quick and nimble you have to wonder if they ever figure skated ...

Oh, and don't forget to keep an eye out for some of these .... :loveya:

12. One of the things that I really like about going to a game live
is that you can actually see plays develop. On television, it appears to be much more random and scoring looks to be dumb luck. But, most times the opposite is true.

The other thing that gets lost on television is the speed with which the players skate. Hockey has a bad reputation, but I think it is one of the most awesome sports to watch in person.

I'll bet no one expected me to respond to this thread :P

14. Just watch the game.
It's actually a beautiful game, and the players show much skill racing about the ice athigh speeds. It's fairly easy to see the plays develop and the lanes open up. Don't worry about always watching the puck, or about learning the rules-- just enjoy yourself and cheer for the home team.

:)

16. Lucky You!
lord do I miss hockey.

It takes a bit of getting used to to watch the puck and plays and get the rules, but it's definitely a great sport to watch, especially live.

18. there is nothing
like going to a hockey game, having a cold beer & enjoying the game. hopefully you'll have a nice noisy audience & that makes the experience even that more awesome. college hockey is a hoot that way, but i've never been to minor league game. i'm sure you'll have a blast, just take it all in.
