1. Too much synth
And the melodies aren't strong enough.

I do like Power Windows (although nothing after that), which has carloads of synth-- but also has genuinely well-written songs, like "Territories."

But basically I think they peaked with Moving Pictures.

Actually the real problem with P/G is that so many of the songs are so dour; it's like it's the real soundtrack to 1984. (Maybe that's why you're listening to it now, because it captures the vibe of this pResidency so well? Maybe I should revisit it myself!)

2. Actually, that is part of why I listen to it.
I enjoy the album because of that. I like just about all Rush. It's all great in my book. They still kick ass live. But it fits the mood of this country very well and my personal mood for the last couple of years.

3. Beginning of the end
No coincidence that it was their first non-Terry Brown-produced album, and consequently, was dull and lifeless.

Also saw the concert from this album's tour, and it wasn't even half as good as the "Signals" concert, their last great album too.

They have been very boring for over 20 years now.

4. Gee, I thought I was the only one who thought Rush should have retired...

after "Moving Pictures". I remember meeting Geddy Lee and thinking that "this guy looks like somebody's grandmother!" They used to crank. I saw them numerous times, and still think 2112 was the best tour they did!

5. I saw the Power Windows tour
Way over the top in lights, video, laser, you name it.

And for all of that, the best "special effect" was provided by some random audience member, who had photocopied enough Monopoly money to fill a backpack, and then flung it all around when they did "Big Money" :-)

I thought Geddy was still on form (I'm a bass player myself and I admire his busyness within the trio format), and Peart I always love (I can't understand why Pete Townshend has never asked him to do a Who tour, Peart is Keith Moon reincarnated, only sober)-- but Alex Lifeson was just phoning it in. Never went to see them again.

6. I liked the Body Electric
But that album was bleak.

I think Test for Echo was their most recent high-water mark. Loud and raucous. Overproduction is probably their biggest weakness. I love'em anyway.

7. They can do no wrong in my book.
I saw them on the Vapor Trails tour and it was excellent.
