3. Laugh a lot
Then people will at least notice that you have a sense of humor even if you aren't humorous yourself.

If you want to be funny but aren't naturally that way (like myself) I don't know that there's much that can be done. Maybe work on stealing other people's jokes and telling them in as humorous a manner as can be done? haha

7. I am so serious
I want to be funny but that is not me but people really like those who are funny. I notice those who have a sense of humor are appreciated not only her on DU but on other posts.

5. Become a philosopher.
Consider the eternity of time, the vastness of space, the innumerable atoms in the universe. Think about the fact that, no matter what happens, you will die. Then begin to realize that everything, no matter how important it seems now, is not actually all that important.

Balance this seemingly cynical attitude with a good heart, and a still underlying wish to do the best. Then everything begins to seem funny, even when it's terribly sad.

"Life is a tragedy to those who feel, and a comedy to those who think."

Somehow the trick lies in combining a realization of how ultimately absurd it all is with a determination to try anyway.

Does that make any sense whatsoever?

6. Try to be around people who are humorous.
I find that almost any social skill is best learned through association and observation.

Of course, I'm naturally a bit of a loner. Any interpersonal advice from me should perhaps be taken with a grain of salt.

12. To
American Tragedy, I am a loner also and my interpersonal skills are not the greatest either.

I learn through others but am at the point where I am tired of learning from others.

15. I understand.
I'm honestly not certain why, but most people seem to have a way of mentally exhausting me after a while. It tends to deter further interactions.

8. read Sedaris...better yet, listen to him!
and soak it up... I highly reccomend 'Me Talk Pretty One Day' - pee in your pants funny! http://www.barclayagency.com/sedaris.html

find someone you find funny and study what exactly makes them funny. Then tweak that for yourself and your personality. Take baby steps and just RELAX! Truly funny people have no shame and don't mind falling flat on their face or behind!

If worse comes to worse, quote those you find funny, you know...'well, David Sedaris says...blah blah blah..."

9. some DUer created this website for that very purpose
What is the Comic Grail?

I've studied comedy my whole life, and I still don't think I know a damn thing about it. Sure, I can crack a joke, but thing I want is the art! That is The Comic Grail.

What's the difference between Cleese and that drunk at the end of the bar who's "got a joke for you...."?

Why do I laugh until it hurts whenever I see Blazing Saddles but I run like hell whenever I see that obnoxious co-worker who's "got a joke for you..."?

And aren't that drunk at the end of the bar and the obnoxious co-worker the same guy? It would explain a lot.

So what is this thing? What is comedy? Let's see if we can find out together.

13. If you are a very serious person, then you could perhaps learn to be
funny from the way that Leslie Nielson is funny in movies like Airplane and Naked Gun (or whatever the hell it's called), etc.

He is great at being the serious person who says horribly funny things. You can be very funny by being very literal.

Also, it will help your humor to use proper English: correct spellings, articles, grammar, etc. At least, if you want to be funny in print.

16. Learn how to deliver...
off the wall comments with a perfectly straight face. I do this to people all the time. My boss recently said the company had to make sacrifices. I asked, "Human?", he said "NO!", and I managed to look disappointed...
10 people in the room suddenly had coughing fits.

It is just unsophisticated.
