Norwegians Confused by Bush Salute
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 11:23 AM by madinmaryland
I think actually more that Norwegians are confused.....

OSLO, Norway (AP) -- President Bush's "Hook 'em, 'horns" salute got lost in translation in Norway, where shocked people interpreted his hand gesture during his inauguration as a salute to Satan.

That's what it means in the Nordics when you throw up the right hand with the index and pinky fingers raised, a gesture popular among heavy metal groups and their fans in the region.

"Shock greeting from Bush daughter," a headline in the Norwegian Internet newspaper Nettavisen said above a photograph of Bush's daughter Jenna, smiling and showing the sign.

For Texans, the gesture is a sign of love for the University of Texas Longhorns, whose fans are known to shout out "Hook 'em, 'horns!" at sporting events.

1. Aw, c'mon ... we KNOW what he meant ...
The Longhorns were the furthest thing from his mind, since he isn't even a 'true' Texan.

What he was thinking was: HEIL SATAN !!! :scared:

8. What difference does it make?
Whether he is gesturing an invocation to satan or to a longhorn bovine (..."thou shalt have no false gods before me")...where is the fundamentalist outrage?

The people started giving whole offerings to the calf, and God told Moses to get down the mountain quickly for the people were worshiping a calf. God told Moses, "Leave me alone so that I can destroy these people and make a great nation spring from you." (Exodus Chapter 32 verse 11)

2. I had the same trouble when I was in Greece.
I did that and one of my cousins thought I was worshiping Satan. I'm not sure if I ever cleared it up.

3. I am not really up on sports hand signs, but
I thought that the "Hook 'em Horns!" sign was the extended pinky and thumb. But, like I said, it is not an area that I have concentrated upon...

4. Isn't that what rappers do?
I have no idea what that means either. If anyone knows, let me know.

5. No, they are doing it right
You're confusing it with the "hang loose" sign perhaps?

6. Not just Norway
Most of the world is probably convinced we have a Satan Worshipper as President now.

Of course, it's not JUST because of the frequent Satanic salutes. There are plenty of other signs as well...

9. It doesn't really matter what Texans think it is.
It will take on a whole new meaning to those who distrust Bush because of his level of secrecy.

11. Why did he even bother with the gesture
if no one in the parade was supposed to look at him?

12. He was invoking the power of Satan...
...to make absolutely sure that no one looked at him.
