Yet another career change for me. Just so you know.
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 03:39 PM by Cobalt Violet
Yesterday I interviewed for and got the job for a hairstylist. I have been out of the business for over 15 years. I went to hairdressing school right after high school and a few years before I went to college for my fine art degree. My license had expired in college and I didn't renew because I never thought I would do it professionally again. I decided a few months ago to get my license back and I did.

Part of my reasons for doing this:

No one I've polled will go to India or China for a haircut or high lights.(outsource proof occupation)

Even in recessions people will always need haircuts.(recession proof)

I feel more able to handle the stresses of this job.

There is a lot of potential to move up into managing, owning, specializing, teaching, etc.

2. Great!
I think it's good that you've found a path for yourself. So many of us just stay in jobs that slowly kill us. We die a little bit every day. I'm glad when some can find a way to what they want. It gives me hope.

3. And the freepers in the chair will have to shut up and listen while
you have scissors held to their hair!

Congratulations and good luck!

4. Tips!
Make sure that you have an inoffensive way of indicating that "tips are accepted." Starting out this can be nice bonus.

Good luck on your renewed avocation.

I have been in landscaping for a few years. Since three in my family have had bouts of skin cancer, I have taken to finding an "indoor" occupation under the advisement of common sense.

7. Tips! I'll be working in one of the wealthiest locations in Massachusetts!
But the wealthiest people aren't always the best tippers. It will be a very good location for me to build a clientele.

6. I had a buddy who became a mechanic, saying that people will
never bring their cars to india to get fixed. He got laid off from Ford anyway. Lame! I think yours is more secure though. Bravo!

8. and you could maybe be your own boss someday.......
you should discretely get the phone numbers of your clients in case you move. i've lost a few hairdressers, and wish they were smart enough to have kept in touch.

9. There are options. Booth rental would be good once I have a clientele.
I can be my boss without the headaches of having to manage or own a shop.
I just need the clientele first.
