Just watched Solaris (George Clooney version). Ask me anything.
The basics: no, I didn't read the book, nor did I see the 1972 version.

4. Because it's not boring, it's slow. Not standard Hollywood fare.
Think of it as the cinematic equivalent of progressive rock.

11. the original was slow, the remake BORING
but that's just my opinion.

If you want really slow and really boring you have to go take a cinema course in college. Those movies are best watched sitting in the back of the room with a large jug of cheap wine. "Wait, go back and show us the baby carriage going down the steps again!" Glug glug.

On the other hand I watched IROBOT last night with my kid and that was fast paced and HORRIBLE and one long PRODUCT PLACEMENT COMMERCIAL, but I didn't tell him 'cause he was liking it.

7. Yes -- if you like brainy movies.
It is deeply philosophical, kind of like 2001, but without any half-hour long acid trip, which is an advantage.

a half-hour long acid trip isn't such a bad idea. :-)

I liked the original Russian version better, but the George Clooney one wasn't half bad.

8. Do you think it was a metaphor for Mrs. Garret buying the bakery?
And having Tootie and Blair help her run it?
