iPod Shuffle! (I just got one)
Very cool little device. Not what you want if you are expecting a real iPod -- it has no screen, so you can't select a song or playlist, but it's great for exercising or travel. It's like a USB disk-key, just flash memory that plugs directly into the computer. You can just plug it in and "autofill" from your library or a specific playlist.

Very very cool. I like it!

1. I've seen them at the Apple store...and I wants one
even though I have a "real" iPod...it is just so darn cute, that little iPod shuffle! That's how Apple gets us by designing awesome looking gadgets and making them work as well as they look.

4. Yep, Apple is great that way, like Sony
It looks good and feels good in your hand.

I think it's a great companion to an iPod. It's flash mem, so it won't skip and you can't break it.

2. I got a Creative Nomade Jukebox Zen Xtra.
Its bigger, its heavier, its interface isn't as clear, but it cost $200, came with a protective belt clip carrying case, and holds 30 GB.

3. I'd never heard of it before this, but it's brilliant.
Lose most of the capacity, some of the interface, and all of the display, make it ultraportable, switch to a flash drive that can't skip because it has no moving parts, put together some clever sales pitches, knock three-fifths off the price, and everyone's happy.

5. The price is the key
I don't REALLY need an iPod, but for $99, it suddenly became affordable enough to justify.

The iLife isn't quite as harmonious as it seems. Lurking underneath Apple's beautifully designed digital music players and computers are poisonous chemicals like lead and mercury that can cause birth defects and disabilities. When the millions of Apple's obsolete computers and other electronic products hit the landfills and incinerators, millions of pounds of toxic lead and other highly toxic materials will be dumped into our air, land, and water. Apple should live up to its ethical reputation and take leadership to stop the growing mountain of toxic electronic waste from poisoning our families and communities. It should develop the best recycling system for its used machines and build cleaner and safer electronic products.

Millions of people bought or received iPods digital music players this holiday season. The iPods contain toxics like lead and other harmful chemicals that are associated with infertility and brain damage. And because Apple has designed the iPod so that consumers cannot easily replace the batteries, consumers will either have to pay Apple a hefty fee to replace them or throw the used up iPods in the trash, ending up in landfills where the iPods will leak their poisons into our communities through the water and air. Some will be shipped overseas to China, India or Africa for metal recovery where poor children sifting through the trash will be poisoned with their toxics.

Sorry to be a killjoy. But if Al Gore was on the board of dictators when this ambonination of a product was introduced to him, he should step down on being an authority on the environment. (of course, when he's a politician it's okay. When he's on a board of directors, it's all about money.)

7. If you were on the design team,
where exactly would you put a removable battery, port, and cover?

9. A guy here at work replaced his own battery.
He bought a kit that included everything he needed for $30. He said it was a sinch to replace.

8. My parents will be buying one each

Saw them at the local Apple store this weekend (well, the display units, anyway. They were sold out of them). I think it's the $99 price of the 512MB model that finally snared them.
