Poll question: Favourite DEAD KENNEDYS LP song?
Sure, most of the members have devolved into industry whores, but DK used to be a forcve to be reckoned with. Many an old school Punk cut his/her teeth on Dead Kennedys, and, for that, we as a culture can be grateful...

So...where do ya draw the line...?

3. I'm surprised...
mmmhhh, I think Arnold is running and you don't have a bigger problem now? IIRC, California über alles was a kind of song about fashist attitudes among hippies. When Reagan became the candidate for the republicans at the beginning of the 80ies, they wrote "We have a bigger problem, now".
I'm dissapointed,
Hello from Germany,
Dirk

5. I was commenting on 3:1 votes for "California über alles"....
the 1 vote was mine! And I was somehow amused, looking at California now and knowing how the two songs are related to one another..
Forgive me...
Dirk

Saturday Night Holocaust and Pull My Strings show just how pop-hook able they were.

My personal favourite is "Kill the Poor".

10. Re: Jerry Brown
That phrase always puzzled me. It is clear that the DK's were coming from the Left(as their later output attests). But why attack Brown who seems to be one of the most progressive members of the Democratic party?

I know that the early punks had an antagonistic relationship with the hippies(an early progressive movenment). Still, why attack them(they at least tried to change thinbgs in the 60's__and made real changes).

Granted, FFFRT was the DK's as a sick joke band(their later stuff being overtly political). However, is it possible that the DK's were just expresing(though in a joking manner) a certain reactionary sentiment that was a reality in the punk movement(it's no accident that the Oi movement sprang from punk)?

"...sometimes it's just pub music"

And this is were the best of Oi reaches its most glorious drunken expression.

It's just when it delves into politics that things tend to go awry.

Guns for the Afhgan Warriors and the Reds begin to tremle....ironic that I was listening to this song a lot during our encounter with the Taliban!

14. Let's Lynch the Landlord
But yeah, CA uber alles really, REALLY hits home these days. How many songs of theirs have come true?! (Nobody ever dreamed of anything like Hot Topic when "Anarchy for Sale" was written!)

I saw Jello's first spoken-word appearance after 9/11 here in SF -- and he went on for 4-5 hours straight! The man just went OFF! I wish I'd had more energy througout his talk -- it was like listening to the most fascinating political history lecture.

I've been listening to his spoken-word stuff since age 13 so it was great to see him in person -- my partner and I couldnt help but smile when we first heard his voice come over the mic -- and since I've become a news junkie and reading Buzzflash religiously for the past 2 years, much of his news tidbits I already knew -- but as usual he came out with stuff I've never heard before. I really wish he had a blog!

18. Saw them back when
Edited on Sat Oct-04-03 11:08 PM by DBoon
A wild punk show. Some old bowling alley in Hollywod. A lot of punkers in the lobby - they had ripped off the toilet paper and were trying to light it. Guys were flinging themselves on stage and getting tossed back by these beefy bouncers

I went with some older friends who had been to some extreme stuff ("Acid tests") during the 60's - they couldn't take it and walked out. Met them in the parking lot.

Oh yeah and there were police all over the place.

19. I love everything Biafra wrote for them
it's all gold as far as I am concerned.

But for the scope of their music, you can't beat the last song they ever recorded together.
