7. That's what I thought when I saw the headline
Kellogg -- and the health food movement that started in Battle Creek Michigan. Near the turn of the century --

no link -- just my memory for trivia.

14. Yeah, but they weren't marketed for "normal" folks until 1906.
If you had 'em before then, you must have been a resident of Kellogg's Home for Un-Repentent Wanker-Offers in Battle Creek...:D

16. according to mythology of Battle Creek
The Seventh Day Adventists invented corn flakes -- and Kellogg stole the idea. Battle Creek had health resorts the SDA were into health issues long before it became popular. Some of the health resorts had some rather extreme "health" treatments.

More trivia from my SDA relatives.

Have you ever watched Road to Wellville? I would say rather extreme health treatments. Ugh.

21. That title sounds familiar
I've read about the "health" treatments of the turn of the century 1800s to early 19 hundreds. Hot/cold treatments, enemas, high colonics strange diets. Some of it may have been useful -- walking, fasting, country air etc. but very little science. The SDA had a prophet who used automatic writing to suggest health treatments -- that was "science" to this religion.

27. According to Uncle John's Bathroom Reader
Dr Kelloge was a Seventh Day Adventist. It was his brother who decided to market the flakes(developed in the institute kitchens) causing a rift between the brothers that was never mended

I knew there was a rift -- I assumed that Kellogg was the mythical villain.

This should be a question for trivial pursuit!

Gentlemen, we can rebuild him . . . we have the technology. We have the capability to make the world's first bionic man. Steve Austin will be that man. Better than he was before, Stronger, Faster .

In 100 years there will be a shitload of bionic people and bionic dogs running around, stopping crime.

20. You stole my thunder....
Moller developed that thing just up the road from me. They are planning to build a business/theme park to promote it at the old 'Milk Farm' south of Davis, California (probably be completed about the same time the FAA lets them fly it untethered - never). Hey, I understand if the FAA let them untether the damn sucker, it would travel 300+ MPH! You can have the red one, I'll wait for a stealth midnight blue model M 400. Cool!

25. nuclear winter?
A fascist global corporatocracy in which we are all serfs/slaves? Endless war? Superplagues? Famine? Contamination of the food supply by genetic meddling? A "gray goo" nanotech catastrophe? Extreme global warming causes extinctions?

I sure some great things will happen, and I want to be optimistic, but there are some serious storm clouds on the horizon. Social progress is at a standstill. Life on earth won't get better with only just technological progress. The future ain't what it used to be.

34. I'm thinking more along the lines of a super-winter brought on...
...peak oil running it's course, and our population finally running out of oil. We have pumped so much greenhouse gas in our atmosphere by burning fossil fuels the last hundred years or so, that the planet's due to balance itself out very soon.

This effect is clearly seen in our oceans. Algae and plankton abound more than ever because of all the extra CO2 that they love to eat. Once the extra co2 is removed, they'll suck up the blanket co2 that keeps us from freezing, and then, it's winter for a looooooong time.

31. Good god no! You don't want flying cars!
Think about the idiot that cuts you off while driving because he's reading or shaving or playing a banjo or performing surgery on a small animal or something equally stupid to do when driving. Now, have that happen 5000 feet in the air.
As far as cool stuff goes though, I'd like to see the ability to replace a lung with a compressed air canister, and personal force fields. Somebody equipped like that could go for a walk in outer space or on the moon or anothe planet. Very cool. John Varley's Steel Beach talks about the idea.
