2. I just hope they aren't
"looking ahead" as they say to the Texas game.

5. Heartbroken ------- We lived the Switzer era.
The Selmon Brothers
Gregg Pruitt
"Little" Joe Washington
Billy Simms
Kenny King
The list goes on and on.

You and I have witnessed more great football than most of the whole world combined.

We had tough times for awhile, but now it is the Stoop era and if nothing else its going to be fun every Saturday of the fall.

During the Switzer era it was fun just to watch Barry try to smoke a cigarette on the sidelines. LOL

9. Plenty of others...
As much as I root for the 'Canes now, nothing will equal my passion for the wishbone Switzer Sooners of the '70s thru late '80s.

* Jack Mildren (oops, was he an R politician?)
* Tinker Owens
* Billy Brooks
* Steve Davis
* Elvis Peacock
* the original Buster Rhymes, stunning Nebraska
* Thomas Lott and his bandanas
* Jamelle Holloway
* one year wonder Marcus Dupree
* Uwe von Schamann, especially in Columbus

Barry Switzer was 5-0 combined in bowl games vs. legends Osborne, Paterno and Bowden. He is also one of only two NFL coaches who have ever regained the championship one year after being dethroned, a very little known fact. George Halas is the other, in about '42.

11. Jack Mildren is a Democrat
Has been very active in the Dem party in Oklahoma. He's a regular guest on many of the local sport talk shows and is really a classy guy. Certainly can't say that about J C Watts.

I graduated from OU in the seventies and have spent many Saturdays watching the Sooners play. Even though I think the current offense OU runs is the most appropriate for todays game, I sure do miss the wishbone. In it's time, it was an amazing offense. A typical game might be 400 yards rushing, 100 yards passing(2 of 2 and 1 TD), 25 first downs and 2 to 1 ratio in time of possesion.

Booooooomer Sooooooooner

12. Great, I knew Mildren was a politician
And I know Barry Switzer was credited with helping OU grad Brad Henry win the 3-way gov race last year. Now who was that bullshit Republican who Henry nipped?

I was just old enough to watch and remember OU's first (surprise) unveiling of the 'bone, vs. Texas in '70. Jumped out to something like a 10-0 lead then got blitzed like 42-10. But you could see the amazing speed and potential they had with Mildren, Pruitt, Joe Wylie and Co, completely unlike the cloud of dust Texas wishbone with Steve Wooster at FB.

I still don't understand why more college teams don't embrace the wishbone. It would probably require great talent for a team to ever win or contend for a national championship with it, but I know damn well many lesser teams who can never contend for the title would greatly benefit, as Air Force has proven for well over as decade.

13. Steve Largent was Henry's opponent
Thank God we didn't have to endure 4 or more years of Largent. He is strictly a clone of bush and many others in the repub party. Switzer really did play a huge part in helping get Henry elected. Traveled the state drumming up voters, doing ads, etc.

AwsieDooger, for not being an OU grad or an Oklahoman, you sure know Soooner football. I'm impressed. Since I grew up in Oklahoma, I've always followed the Sooners. However, it's interesting to hear of other people outside of the state mentioning that they too have followed them. Bob Stoops has said when he was growing up, OU was one of his favorite teams and that Little Joe(in his silver shoes) was his favortie player.

8. That's not what my Las Vegas pals are counting on
The stat I've heard all week is OU has not covered the pointspread the week before Texas for the last 6 straight years.

Always love that lookahead garbage: it's a year round sport now and we only play 11 or 12 Saturdays, but let's donate one and not try this week.

Today OU is -21 at Iowa State.
