"Straight Pride Week" To Be Celebrated By College Republicans

EDMOND, Okla. -- A University of Central Oklahoma student group is planning what it calls "Straight Pride Week" on campus.

Members of the College Republicans said despite objections from some, they have every right to celebrate.

"The general gist is that if you are a straight student on campus be proud, be loud, this is your time to shine," said college Republican Kyle Houts.

The group has posted fliers on campus that read, "we're here, we're conservative, we're out."

Members of the Gay Alliance for Tolerance and Equality say they consider the College Republican's celebration an attack on gay and lesbian students.

"What is there to say about it, 'I'm proud, and I'm straight and I guess white,' I don't know?" said GATE member Jennifer Rodriguez. "I think they definitely are being discriminatory because there's probably a lot of gay Republicans out there."

University officials have given the College Republicans permission to put up their fliers, but say their approval does not constitute an endorsement.

I'm a woman married to a man. No one questions us about our "lifestyle." No one takes potshots at us. Other parents aren't afraid to let their children play with ours. We can hold hands and kiss each other in public without fear. We have all the legal protections and privileges marriage provides. For us, every day is "straight day." Wouldn't it be great if every day were simply "human being" day?

Old, crusty, decrepit Republicans operate out of a total disregard for the welfare of the country because they'll be dead in twenty years, so what do they care? But college students who align themselves with that party are joining up with the people who are destroying their future. A young person voting Republican is like Stockholm Syndrome without the kidnapping part.

Sorry, it's clear to me that those college republicans with straight pride week are disgusting sorry excuses for humans.

They have never been beat up, denied jobs or housing, called derogatory names for their sexual identity or had to ever endure one single fucking impact on their personal lives from being straight.

They've never been told they are immoral for being alive, or termed mentally ill, imbalanced and against "natures law", whatever that is.

The term "pride" comes from those of us who have survived a lifetime of bigotry and snideness and often outright hatred and have come to realize that we are worthy people and that we do have something to be proud of IN SPITE OF what people like college republicans think or would have us believe.

Most of us have heard those messages since we were children at a time when your perception of what people think of you shapes who you will become. And here those same people are still trying to do it, but this time they're organizing to do it. It's a travesty of humanity, but then again it's hard to find a republican who isn't.
