What Song Lyrics Have You Misunderstood?

This is a guilt free thread. You can't say, how could you possibly think that!:eyes: I mean who's to explain why we hear things the way we do.

Here are a couple for me.

More Than a Woman- by the Bee Gees and Tavares

I really thought for a week or two they were saying "Bald Headed Woman"

The other one I think of is "Alive and Kicking" by Simple Minds. I actually thought they were saying "I'll fuckin' kick ya." I realize that a song with those lyrics, would probably not get heavy radio play in 1986, but that was what I heard when I listened to the song.

What are some of yours?

I thought those were the lyrics for years... :shrug: I couldn't figure out how they could get lost in rock and roll by listening to the Beach Boys, but...

2. That's a Great One....

it's funny you mention that song, because I had a good friend in elementary school, who had a very perverse talent for changing the words to songs, to something...er well, perverse. "Drift Away," was one of the songs he changed the lyrics to.

My oldest kid was singing The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" at the top of his lungs one morning, or I should say, his interpretation of it:

"The Salvation Army couldn't hold me back..."

The youngest, however, topped him with his rendition of TLC's "Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls." The song came on as a Muzak track in Target one day and he blurted out,"Hey, I remember this song!" and then proceeded to sing it very loudly in the crowded store. Apparently, what he liked was the super hero aspect of the song, because he serenaded the soon-to-be-crying-with-laughter crowd with, "Go go Jason Waterfalls."

6. I Misinterpreted This One on Purpose

My cousin is a big Bon Jovi fan. While visiting at her house one day, Bon Jovi's 'It's My Life' came on the radio. I started singing along...

'Here I sit all broken-hearted

paid my dime but only farted'

Unfortunately, the humor was lost on her.

7. I remember when a friend of mine thought Steve Miller was singing

"big ol' Jed and Lionel, please don't take me away..." when the actual lyrics were "big ol' jet airliner...." If you listen to the song from his perspective, then these words can be heard. I still sing them out loud every time I hear them and laugh as I did then.

8. I Was a Non-Traditional College Student

which is to say, a geezer amongst the young pups. One day in the student lounge, a mixed group of geezers & non-geezers was discussing music. Creedence Clearwater Revival came up, and one of the youngsters said, 'I like that one song...something like 'there's a bathroom on the right,' referring to 'there's a bad moon on the rise.' Much hilarity erupted, of course.
