Name My Puppy
I got a brand new, roly-poly lab puppy last night. My lab named Ruly, that I had for many years died a few months ago of heart disease, and I was devastated. I am fortunate that this new puppy is Ruly's great nephew.

I am at a loss for coming up with a name for this 8 week old bruiser. Take a look at some pictures of him here:

(He's the pup on the left )

http://homepage.mac.com/skiph/PhotoAlbum100.html

And here:
http://homepage.mac.com/skiph/PhotoAlbum101.html

If you have QuickTime loaded, check out puppy's first night, and puppy's first snow.
http://homepage.mac.com/skiph/iMovieTheater102.html
http://homepage.mac.com/skiph/iMovieTheater103.html

Be patient, they take a minute or so to load.

Anyway, once you get a look at him, can you suggest a name? I like interesting, multi-syllabic names. Ruly was named after a guy named Robert Ruly Carpenter III, a wealthy DuPont family member who owned the company I worked. I thought Ruly was a stupid name for a grown man, but a great name for a puppy.

Names I am tossing around:
Archer
Hunter
Tyler
Toby
Maxwell

He comes from a family whose relatives names include:
Thurston, Winston, Thatcher, Tika, Otto.

But I want a name that sounds kind of rugged, outdoorsy. The dog will be adventuring with me everywhere, in the jeep, or surfing, or boating, or chasing me as I ride my horses.

Heh. I was thinking the same thing. This boy DOES like to eat, is a bit roly poly, and let me tell you, he LOVES the ladies. He is outrageously charming with my mother and sister, ha ha ha.

And he makes me feel happy and secure, yeah he's a clinton.

that's my cat's name (don't let that discourage you, lol) and I love it. It's easy to say and easy to create nicknames with (Ri-Bear, for example). Also it's a little bit unusual, but not so much that people are like "your dog's name is WHAT?!"

edit: eeek, grammar!

26. OK, there are tons of dogs named Winston and Max
and Brady too for that matter. People love naming bulldogs or pugs "Winston." I am not sure why there are so many Maxes and Bradys. Other overused dogs names are Maggie, Maddie, Jessie, Skookum (at least in Seattle), and Buddy. They are all fine names - there are just lots of animals named those things.

37. Not Too Many Syllables
Edited on Mon Jan-31-05 02:38 PM by ps1074
It is recommended fog's name have strong consonants and few syllables. It helps with getting dog's attention.

The 'perfect' doggy name should have just 2 syllables. Names like Rosemary or Pretoria are too long and will confuse the dog :(

When I saw the doggy, the first name I thought of was FUNNY :)

Doggy is sooo cute... Can I have it please? :eyes:

edited for damn spelling

39. "Eyes- Ack" (Isaac) maybe 'Zack' for short.
"interesting, multi-syllabic names" aren't such a good idea. A dog needs to instantly recognize his/her name, so it should be simple. It should also not sound like any of the primary commands: No, Down, Stay, Come, Sit, Heel, or Mark.

The grandson is just a little too young for a puppy now. But, in a couple years his daddy is getting them a pup just like the one which has, now, joined your family.

When Jerry Orbach passed recently, my son made the decision to name their first puppy.... Lenny.
