Monday's 'IN' The Undergroundrailroad -- Monday, October 06, 2003
MONDAYS 'IN' THE UNDERGROUNDRAILROAD

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to MONDAYS 'IN' THE UNDERGROUNDRAILROAD a place deep deep inside The Democratic Underground where we meet, greet and answer questions of the day. New to the UNDEROUNDRAILROAD?? NO problem! You will receive the RED CARPET TREATMENT . You'll get the props and all the star treatment you deserve!

Today our dish is a traditional fall dessert, Corn Pudding. My mother made corn pudding on a regular basis between Halloween and Thanksgiving. It's such a great comfort food that can be served as a main course or as a late snack. I have found a very simple recipe for corn pudding that I think you will enjoy. To compliment you corn pudding may I suggest a white hot chocolate? A very nice and creamy beverage to keep you warm.

Oh, and don't forget to get those PUMPKINS!

UGRR IN THE DU HOUSE! So let's get to it. Let's check out the Undergroundrailroad for today.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ASKING ANITA HILL

IF YOU were face-to-face with ANITA HILL what would you ask her? Think about that question for a moment.

The issue of sexual harassment has sparked much debate in the last decade and now the issue of sexual harassment is back in the form of Arnold Schwarzengger vs. 15 women. This current chapter of what constitutes sexual harassment and a powerful male figure, made me think of Anita Hill and her brave decision to step forward after hearing that her harasser was going to hold a position on the United States Supreme Court. Who could forget that memorable voice during her testimony? When she walked into the hearing room looking so stunning in her turquoise suit, appropriately poised in a leather armchair at the table. As she entered the chambers, I think the world stopped for a second. I remember the panel of all white senators looking at Anita Hill with a stunned expression. Could a black woman in the middle of CHAOS, with so much at stake, walk into the Senate Confirmation hearings looking THAT good? What drama! It was a PRICELESS! Just for a fleeting moment I thought, well, why NOT Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas as a couple? Both attorneys, both attended Yale Law School, both very dynamic African-American role models. I remember during the testimony, Clarence Thomas acknowledged that after Anita Hill had left the EOC, he would take a call "especially if it was Anita".

Since her testimony in 1991, Anita Hill has addressed her own motives for speaking out about the alleged harassment: "What people can't really understand is that women can come forward on their own," she said. "What I wanted was for everyone listening to understand that these things mattered -- not necessarily for me, but in this particular forum they mattered in terms of whether of not we were getting a person who should sit on the Supreme Court."

A lot has happened to Anita Hill since her time in the international media spotlight. Immediately after the hearings she became the subject of intense scrutiny when Congress passed a resolution to investigate the leak of the FBI interview with her about Thomas. Her phone records were subpoenaed and family members were questioned. The stress of the hearings exacerbated some existing health problems and politicians in her native state of Oklahoma called for her resignation from her teaching position at the University of Oklahoma, where she was a professor of law. She also felt the pain of rejection. As she states "I became the messenger who had to be killed."

I personally look upon Anita Hill as a heroine. She has brought a greater awareness to the issues pertaining to sexual harassment and the interpretation of sexual harassment laws. Anita Hill has made it possible for more women to file sexual harassment charges and not feel the reprisal of jeopardizing their career.

Back to my question to Anita Hill. I would ask Anita Hill, "how do you keep your hair looking so perfect? I need a re-do. Give me some hair tips!" Then I would ask just one more teeny question. "Where is that "power" turquoise suit?"

Then take the "History 122" quiz :http://chnm.gmu.edu/courses/122/hill/quiz/index.html

Thousands attend reinterment of Colonial-era slaves in N.Y.

Remains of 419 people were found 12 years ago at a construction site

Associated Press

October 5, 2003

NEW YORK - Underneath a gray Manhattan sky, thousands of people turned out yesterday for the reburial of 419 Colonial-era slaves and free blacks just a short distance from the market where some of them were once sold.

"It's a special day, solemn and significant," Jim Huffman, 52, a New York librarian, said as drummers in traditional African kente cloth provided music for the crowd.

The remains had been uncovered in 1991 during construction of a federal office tower in lower Manhattan.

Under pressure from the community, the government abandoned the work and began examining what they found. The site turned out to be a 5-acre burial ground that had been closed in 1794 and long forgotten. It was the final resting place for an estimated 20,000 people of African descent.

The reinterment ceremony yesterday marked the end of a long struggle to have the African Burial Ground recognized.

1. Good Morning, Mina!
Edited on Mon Oct-06-03 10:34 AM by Aristus
I don't have a lot of time this morning. I gotta take my car in for service. I wanted to jot this down and get back to you later. I can't speak with any authority on the subject of Anita Hill. I just don't know that much about her, or the Clarence Thomas case. It just seems like a typical right-wing hatchet job they did on her.

1. I'd like to ask her why she hasn't published an expose on the whole thing. Or has she?

2. Taking my car for its 30,000 mile service. Which means I'm driving a loaner to school later today. Yuck! I love my PT Cruiser! :-)

3. My favorite board game is "Clue". Always loved that one. Appeals to my Victorian parlour sensibilities, I guess.

Have a terrific day, Mina! You're the Greatest! :hi:

Your favorite board game is CLUE a fun game that I also like!

Have a terrific day and a great rest of your week Bob. Thanks for taking the time to post in the UNDERGROUNDRAILROAD.

2. Good morning Mina!
Another great thread! I don't have a lot of time to chat this morning (STUPID MONDAYS) but I'll at least answer the questions and wish you a great day!

1. I'd ask Ms. Hill to tell some of the stories I'm sure she's heard from survivors of sexual harassment and abuse. I'd ask her to talk about how inspired I'm sure she is by millions of women across this country who've shared their experiences and hope with her.

2. AARGH. Basically, working nonstop from 8:30 this morning til 7 at night. I'm tired already and it isn't even noon yet! But tonight I'm going to watch DVD's and relax. :)

3. Hmm, I'm pretty good at Trivial Pursuit. :)

2. Work, work then R/R along with DVD's. What are we watching Cat?

Great daily as usual! Very informative! :-)

1. My question for Anita Hill: What would you do if you had 5 minutes alone with Clarence Thomas? }(

2. Today's schedule: Right now I am finalizing preparations for teaching a class this afternoon and tomorrow morning. This afternoon, 13 bright, shiny faces from our field staff will be here to learn what I have in my head (regarding our new automation system). I wrote the user guide, and now it's time to train! :bounce:

3. I like "Hearts" and "Spades" - the card games, that is! Oh, I love Trivial Pursuit as well. :D

12. Thanks for the Golf Cart Fix GOP ;-)

Now your question to Anital Hill: "What would you do if you had 5 minutes alone with Clarence Thomas?"

OK, now I have a question for you. What do YOU think that Anita Hill would do if she had 5 minutes alone with Clarence Thomas? Actually, it's a very interesting question and I would like to be a fly on the wall.

I would be willing to bet that he would probably apologize for his lying, coca-cola, renting VCR's, going to Church ASS!

Next question !

Schedule: Apple for the teacher 13 students! Don't get on GOPisEvil's evil side ;-)

Game: Heart and spades (do you play for $$$?) And the DU favorite, Trivial Pursuit :)

Hey, take care, have a great rest of your week and here's a (((hug)))

5. Morning - great thread
1. What question would you like to ask Anita Hill?

I'd have a million but a few really stand out. What were her feelings after reading parts of Blinded by the Right in which Brock says there was an intentional and vicious campaign to discredit her? Vindicated or angry? Does she have a secret pet name for Arlen Specter? I'd also love to hear her views on the entirety of Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court decisions.

2. What is your schedule today ?

Work, gym, lunch, home, dinner, dog walking, reading, bed.

3. What is your favorite board game or card game?

There's a game called spite and malice that you play with two decks. It's alot of fun.

BTW, my son thinks Tupac is alive too.

14. Monica, welcome to Mondays IN The Undergroundrailroad!

Let me roll out the RED CARPET FOR MONICA ! I welcome you Monica to our world on Mondays where we really do have fun and jump start our week ahead on a Monday.

Thanks for checking us out.

Now, for the questions. Let me check you out.

Anital Hill: You would love to hear her views on the entirety of Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court decisions. Excellent question, excellent Monica. I too would also love to hear (like a fly on the wall) her thoughts.

Your schedule: OK, work, then a work out, lunch (yum) then dinner, (yum, yum), walk the dog, reading and bed time.

Favorite board game: Spite and malice. I have never heard of that. Let me know how you play it!

Oh, BTW, the TUPAC is alive has a huge following and my son also think the same (Like Elvis).

Monica, it's been fun. Thanks for stopping in and now you become a regular in the UGRR and I look forward to your visits on Monday.

Peace,

18. Wow thank you!
For the welcome and the red carpet treatment. I'm sitting here at work imagining myself strolling down that red carpet with a bright red dress and red shoes. So what if I clash.

This was a great thread and I had fun reading and responding to it. You obviously put a lot of thought, imagination, research and work into it and it shows. It will definitely be a Monday highlight from now on. Add this to Top Ten Conservative Idiots and next thing you know I'll start loving Mondays.

I think dinner is going to be Philippine Adobo chicken and pork stew. I'm feeling my chef juices flowing today.

Spite and malice is a card game with two decks for two people and the object is to get rid of all your cards by giving them to your opponent. It's kind of like war and double solitaire combined. My son and I play sometimes when we get tired of crazy eights and it can go on for hours.

I think my son's going to be getting a present from mom this week. Check this out: :hi:

6. Hey Ms. Mina, Mina. Great Thread Today! Thanks for THE BOONDOCKS!

Yep. Know about Ms. Anita Hill and still have my "ANITA TOLD THE TRUTH" T-shirt. Sister was railroaded, pure and simple.
And my question to Ms. Hill would be more of a statement of support and a big "thank you" (I would also invite her to dinner;-)

Now, I am on my way to Ghettoland because I'm buying that game. Sounds like fun. Currently I like to play chess, Clue and I have a pocket game for Trivia Pursuit that I play when I have nothing else to do (which is kinda rare).

My schedule is work, home, lawn duty, dinner and start my day all over again. At least I can, as you say Mina, "jump-start" my week IN the Undergroundrailroad. I look forward to your thread (and get nervous if I don't see it - am I addicted?) Yep, I am.

Thanks for another excellent thread Mina. Your are a DU Star!!

Love to you,

So you had one of those "Anital told the Truth" T-Shirts. Cool!

I see that instead of a question you would just issue a "statement of support". And it would be well deserved Oh and you like the Ghettoland game, LOL. Let me know how you like it.

Work schedule: Work, home and lawn duty. Well, gotta keep up with the "Joneses" as they say.

Thanks BJ for those compliments. They mean a great deal to me.

Thanks for stopping in to say hello.

7. Hello Mina. Happy Monday DU! Great Topics Today IN The UGRR
Well Good Monday to all deep down in the Undergroundrailroad. Umm that corn pudding looks so good. Made a note of the recipe and I think it could very well serve as a main course with a salad or soup. I'm going to prepare it on Friday (where I still eat meatless meals on Friday, a tradition I can't give up).

Thank you for the story about the remains of the Colonial Era Slaves who were buried in New York. What a very important and historical moment. I'm glad the remains were returned to their burial ground.

OK, moving on to the questions:

1. I would ask Anita Hill how she felt with all the media attention focused on her and how she coped.

2. My schedule today is preparing dinner and planting my Mums in flower boxes.

3. Favorite board game or card game? Bridge.

Have a great week ahead Mina and DU.

I see that corn pudding has got your interest. Let me know how you like it.

Now, you would ask Anita Hill how she coped with so much Media attention .

Oh, and your going to use your "green" thumb as you are going to plant your mums (what colors?).

Your favorite card game is Bridge! I wish I was a better Bridge player.

Well, thanks for stopping in to say hello and thanks for your kind words GOGO.

8. Morning Mina
Edited on Mon Oct-06-03 12:00 PM by BigMcLargehuge
and Happy Autumn to you. The foliage in my area of NH is about to peak, and pumpkins abound! I am anxiously awaiting Halloween, my favorite holiday as it makes for an abundance of monster movie marathons on local and cable TV stations. I was able to procure a Godzilla-esque costume for my son's first trick-or-treating excursion!

In answer to this week's questions:

Questions Of The Day

1. What question would you like to ask Anita Hill?

I would ask if she had any regrets about her decision to come forth with allegations against Justice Thomas. The aftermath was certainly a hell of a lot harder on her than it was him, and provides a perfect example of double punishing the victim. Knowing the character Ms. Hill from the articles/interviews I've read I tend to think she will answer "no". It has been my experience that the most courageous of people take the greatest risk knowing that the precedent set has the power to change society as a whole. Those courageous people also suffer the greatest repurcussions from those risks, even if successful, and are often not acknowledged until much later for their contribution. When Ms. McLargehuge was in the professional workforce I thought of Ms. Hill often and wondered how my wife would handle a similar workplace environment. I would also thanks Ms. Hill for her precedent.

2. What is your schedule today ?

Work 8-5, socialize with family, 5-7, hapkido 7-9:30, back at DU/working on fiction 10PM -2AM.

3. What is your favorite board game or card game?

Favorite Board game is ironically, considering my response to the first question, "Risk".

17. I feel the same way. Halloween is my favorite holiday! I remember
the days that we would carve our own pumpkins and place a candle inside. Our Halloween costumes were well thought out and we would make our own masks. I remember the days (long ago) when we would invite anyone in our home for a Halloween Holiday Punch. My mom with use her special secret "potion" and it was just so much fun to pour our candy treats out on the floor and go for the best pieces (chocolate!). Yes, Halloween is my favorite holiday also. It's colorful and fun.

OK the questions.

Anita Hill: You would also thanks Ms. Hill for her precedent. Very nice. And, yes, Anita Hill is one of those courageous people who did suffer the greatest repurcussions. Yet, I would add that she always conducted herself like a lady, holding her head up high.

Your schedule: Work, down time with your family, hapkido then back to DU. Oh, btw, thants a good thing ;-)

Your favorite board game is "Risk", something we take everyday.

Thanks for stopping in to say hello BigLargeMcHuge. I always love your posts and the humor that is attached to them!

10. Happy Monday, UGRR

1. What question would you like to ask Anita Hill?

2. What is your schedule today ?

3. What is your favorite board game or card game?

(1) Don't really have a question for her, but I would like to tell her that she is a great American hero, and thank her for what she has done.

(2) Boring. Work, work, work.

(3) Hmmmm. Don't really have a favorite board game, though 'scrabble' is the one I play most often (not often, though). Once upon a time, 'Trivial Pursuit' was quite enjoyable for me. I like almost all card games, especially poker, euchre, hearts, bridge (still learning). No particular favorite.

Feeling pretty good as the baseball team I've been rooting for since 1977 is in the National League Championship Series. For only the 3rd time in my life (1984, 1989, and now 2003). Hopefully they can get to the World Series for the first time in my life!

:hi:

Thanks for the great thread, UGRR, and especially the notes on Anita Hill!

11. Hi, Mina
:hi:

That corn pudding looks good. I make a cornbread that looks very similar, & it is very good now that the days are getting colder.

My answers:

1. I'd ask the same thing as Monica_L, does Anita Hill feel vindicated by Brock's Blinded By The Right? I hope she does. I don't know if I could have borne what she has been through.

2. Today I'm running errands, sending off another care package to my "adopted" soldier in Iraq, picking up some prescription low-protein food for my sick kitty who has kidney problems, doing my banking, picking up some groceries, etc.

3. My favorite card game is Sheepshead. It's hard to find enough people to play a decent game anymore.:-(

Have a good day!

Anita Hill's reaction to BLINDED BY THE RIGHT would be an interesting reaction. She is a very complex woman who is very gifted, smart and intelligent.

AL's Schedule: Today you are running errands, sending off another care package to my "adopted" soldier in Iraq. Al, that is very nice! Hope you Kitty feels better AL. The remainder of your day deals with banking, food shopping and anything that you might have forgot.

Favorite Game: Sheepshead. Al I've never heard of it? I'll have to check that one out!

22. Good afternoon to the Underground Railorad!
I have never had corn pudding and just the sound of it makes my mouth water. Of course I have not had anything to eat all day so I am sure it would taste extra good right now....

Thanks for the write up on Anita Hill..I always learn so much from the UGRR.

Now to answer your questions...

1. I don't know what I would ask Anita Hill because whatever question I would ask her has probably been asked many times over. I guess the first one that comes to mind is how did she keep her sanity during the Clarence Thomas hearings? Did she meditate or what? I am sure it was very difficult having her name and reputation dragged through the mud by those on the Judiciary Committee and those in the media.

2. My schedule today included Yom Kippur services. It is a fast day and as I said above I have not had anything to eat. I AM HUNGRY! I am not *supposed* to eat until after sundown. We will see how I do.

3. I don't really like board games or card games since I find it hard to pay attention long enough to play them. I get restless and bored while playing them. I can tell you my least favorite and that is Monopoly. I don't like the values it teaches at all.

Well have a good day in the Underground Railroad and I look forward to seeing you again next Monday!

26. OK Tues in the UGRR! Hi ikojo! So you like that corn pudding ;-)
It is very good and I have provided the link if you decide to prepare it.

Sorry for the late responses but better late then never. And I do read and respond to each and every post.

ABOUT ANITA: Yes, I think your question to Ms. Hill is a very good one and it's a question I would ask also. HOW DID YOU DO IT? Keep your sanity while the media trashed your reputation. She was a law professor and it was a remarkable accomplishment for an African-American woman at that time.
That being said, she did prevail. I respect her and in time, history, I believe will be kind to Anita Hill.

So! How did you do? Did hunger kick in? I'm sure you made it and happy holidays!

RE: Board Games. You don't like them. I understand your thinking. My mother would *NOT* allow us to play board games until we were teens. When we would visit our friends, they would pull out the board games and we didn't know how to play? After, my mother finally gave it and purchased some educational board games or provided the games (Like Flash Cards) that she used in teaching her own classroom. I grew up in an era where TV was new, radio was popular but reading was the best activity in our household. We had a library and after we read a book, it would go on one special shelf.

Thanks for dropping in Ikojo to say hello again. Of course you are one of our regulars in the UGRR and I will see you next Monday!

Best wishes, love, hugs,

Mina

23. Happy Monday, Mina
I've never heard of corn pudding. I'll have to check it out.

Let me see... I'd ask Anita Hill what she thinks of the Supreme Court now and the direction it's been going.

My day's schedule is pretty slow. I just did 45 minutes on my bike; I spent some time knitting mittens; I'm about to start dinner; I have a Planning Board meeting tonight which, hopefully, won't go too long because I have to come home and watch a baseball game. :)

My favorite game is, like many others here, Trivial Pursuit. I'm also a fan of Hearts and FreeCell on the computer.

Thanks for another terrific Monday edition. You mean a lot to the DU. :yourock:

28. Thanks Maine Dem! You mean a lot to DU ! Happy Tuesday :-)
Sorry for the late response but as you know, I read each post and respond to all. Had a sudden emergency yesterday, so thanks for hanging in there with me MaineDem.

Well, well, well, MaineDem. Your the official health guru for the UNDERGROUNDRAILROAD and corn pudding is very high in carbs, fat and sugar. I use it as an alternative to a "meatless" meal. As of late, I have not been eating meat and don't mind one bit. Anywho, check out the recipe and perhaps you could modify it a bit.

Now, about Anita Hill. You would ask her about the current direction our US Supreme Court is taking and what she think of the current form of the Supreme Court. Excellent questions. I might ask her what did she think about Election 2000 and the role the US Supreme Court played in "selecting" Bush.

Before I continue, I like your "red" socks ;-)

RE SCHEDULE: Well your team won yesterday and I'm sure today there will be another 45 min workout on your bike. Then dinner and then time on DU.

BOARD GAMES: Trivial Pursuit. DU's Number One Choice !

Thanks for stopping in MainDem to share your thoughts with me IN the Undergroundrailroad. I always look forward to your visits on Monday.

Yours in fitness!

Love ya,

Mina

29. Happy Tuesday PP!
ANITA HILL: You would ask, what it was like to watch Clarence Thomas being sworn in as a Supreme Court Justice. Yes, that is an excellent question and one that I thought about as he was being sworn in. It had to be hard on her after all she had to endure.

SCHEDULE: DU, dishes, DU, housework, DU, dinner, DU, etc. GOT IT!

BOARD/CARD GAMES: You like Aggravation and Sorry

I Love Sorry and Aggravation !

Thanks PP for stopping into the Undergroundrailroad!
