Anyone ever taken Diazepam?
I have to go to the dentist on Thursday and after the spectacular failure of my last visit (see a quivering jelly of a man sitting in the dentist chair almost crying because he's too freaked out to do much else) he gave me Diazepam (Valium) 5 mg tablets. (On the day of the appointment I will take one an hour beforehand and then they'll use it in combination with the nitrous oxide.)

He wants me to take one tomorrow so I will know how it makes me feel. Anyone ever taken it that can give me some idea of what to expect?

2. it's an anti-anxiety drug...
...so it helps you stay calm, perhaps a little sleepy, particularly if you've never taken it before.

7. A very light dose
of valium such as you've described will make all the difference in the world for your being able to sit through the procedure. I know. I was also given some once before undergowing a harrowing dental appointment. That dentist also had me listening to music through earphones, and while I didn't fall asleep, I really didn't care what was going on inside my mouth.

Go for it.

10. My experience, too.
Takes the edge off,,,in fact, I told the dentist to take all my teeth out while he was at it...... to save alot of hassel later on! Seemed logical at the time!!

8. 5 mg is a good dose for a start...
it will make you relaxed, especially if you've never taken it before.

I am on a Vioxx and valium/diazepam regemine because of arthritis in my neck. It is a great smooth muscle relaxant, and when I get spasms due to the arthritis/tenseness of muscles I take 10 mg. But I should warn you....don't drive or work with machinery/power tools until the stuff wears off. Could be dangerous.

Relax....try the 5mg while watching a mellow movie that you enjoy, it will calm you for the procedure to come.

Good luck, and stay away from chainsaws while your on the stuff.

9. I had it for a strained neck...
...as a muscle relaxant and it worked great. Took it before bed and when I woke up it was no longer all tense and sore. Course I took it before bed but I remember thinking it was way cool because anything you would get tense about would just kind of slip away, like you'd just forget about it and relax.

13. no, but
we have a cat with, um, behavioral problems. She is now on diazepam. The dosage is 1mg twice a day. It is working very well and she is in no way impaired.

But she only weighs 8 pounds, so I would think that 5mg is an extremely low dose for any human. I would say pop a couple.

14. Oh, no!
I don't want to be too stupored to be able to function afterwards. I'll try the one. If it doesn't work they'll have to try something else.

Of course, I'm not betting that it'll work...

17. You won't be in a stupor
But definitely don't drink ANY alcohol. Also, you shouldn't drive anywhere either. Probably best to try your experiment at home and not at work. At 5 mg, the effects won't last very long, though.

Good luck!

22. My cat had a presciption for Valium, too
He had been abused and when I adopted him he was a pretty nasty animal. He got through that phase and is now a sweetheart.

I keep the label in my scrapbook, though.

24. They use Valium fairly often with cats.
I know the local shelter uses it with cats who won't eat. They give the cat a bit of Valium and suddenly they'll eat anything they can get to...

One time I saw them use it with a cat that was so malnourished that it had forgotten how to be hungry. Literally, before they let loose of the cat it had its head in the food bowl gobbling away.

I am so very glad it doesn't have that same impact on us humans! Since I take it for flying anxiety, I'd be miserable on a plane given what passes for snacks in flight! :)

18. You will feel relaxed, then the NO2 will put you into la la land
for a bit. Get a good night's sleep, and that will be a big help. Take the pill before bed and you will sleep a good 8-9 hours. Sleep and a Prince Valium will help you make it through the visit.

Most of all, relax.

NO2 is so nice, you may not even remember the work being done.

21. Nitrous oxide
It's wonderful, especially for someone who is anxious at the dentist's office. Have fun!

My problem with it is that it makes me randy, and that's not a very appropriate sensation to have in the dentist's chair.

20. I take 5mgs of Valium to fly.
When I have to ride in a small plane I call the Doc up and ask for some Valiums to get me thru the experience. I'm not afraid of the large scale jets they use for commercial transport, but I had an awful experience in one of the little commuter planes one time. As a result, I have terrible anxiety about flying in one.

Usually, I take it about 35-40 minutes before I get on the plane and it really does take the edge off the panic. I even fell asleep on one flight! (I think I actually was SNORING judging by the looks I got!) For me, it reduces thw whole tense up and then panic reflex...

When I had an MRI a few years ago the Neurologist gave some scrip for an anti-anxiety drug that was not Valium. I got in the MRI machine and FREAKED out. They had to call in an anesthegiologist to give me a Valium drip. That time, they made me ride in a wheelchair out of the clinic, and my husband laughed at me because I was so stoned I was just loopy. I was LMAO at riding in a wheel chair and I was LMAO at everything around me.

The best description I can give of it is I felt like I was drunk and happily stoned on pot--with no aggression and no paranoia.

I do not suggest driving and I would suggest that you not attempt to cook anything for a couple hours after. It'd be bad form to burn the house down because you forgto to turn off the burner. :)
