The bad areas don't always look like bad areas.

You can also find nice rentals in Encino and some parts of W. Hollywood.

That's always the question.

Great apartments and condos for rent. Make sure you're in the city of WeHo if possible. Rent control.

There are great resturants within walking distance and very safe.

we need more info than that. what are you doing? where do you need to be every day?

frankly, your options seem a bit, er, white-bread for me. but it's a matter of personal preference, I guess. think long and hard about the commute, that's the best advice I can give you (I had a drive from Venice to Compton every day, and you get real sick of the car)

be east of la cienega in case they come across someone 'with a tan' per se.

If money is no object then Santa Monica is your hometown. You can pay $3000 + for a nice apt in Santa Monica... West Side rentals is a good place to start.

so who am I? I don't like to go to the west side because it's excessively bourgeois, but SM is nice and so are parts of Venice. If it were me, I'd go to WeHo cause creatine is one of the four basic food groups there.

So are you a creatine boy from boy's town? I lived there when I first moved to LA, but it was not really my cuppa tea so I moved further east...it feels more like an East Coast city here, and I love the way east coast cities feel almost as much as I love everything else about LA.

You're great! Yeah I'm one of the boys in boys town. Not quite the gym bunny that I used to be.

One thing I love about WeHo is that we don't have to drive anywhere on the weekends. We have or fave resturants and shops that we go to and let our cars have the weekends off.

But there are some great funky places in Hollywood that I love as well. Club Lingere is a fave of mine. My friend Cindy (the link below) is playing there this Thursday. When ever we go to clubs or resturants outside of Weho, it's all about the cabs. Can't stand to have to worry about drinking and driving.

Since they cancelled rent control. The best area to rent is north of the promenade between Wilshire and Montana and between 2nd and approximately Lincoln. That way, you are walking distance from the beach and close to the freeway as well. It's a great area where you can walk anytime and all amenities are close.

Frankly, it's a bit more quiet than the Brentwood area and on your day off you don't have to get in the car and can stroll the promenade for quiet entertainment or to go get food. Grocery stores are walking distance as well.

IF you need info on a specific place, let me know. MOst of the apartments are in great shape.

Although the owner is an ass, any of the Sterling buildings are well kept and usually have covered parking.

You can get a one-bedroom north of Wilshire in Santa Monica for about $1400, sometimes less. I've been looking here and there for a little bit recently, and I've noticed that prices are coming down. Pacific Palisades is another option; Malibu, too. Really, if money is not a problem, get as close to the beach as possible.

It depends on what you like...I hate the valley personally, but there are some really great places in Sherman Oaks, Encino, Studio City, and even Burbank.

Be careful of the Westside. The traffic West of Beverly Hills up to Santa Monica is infuriating. Everyone will tell you the same places, but as a fellow NYer, may I suggest the Los Feliz area, Gramercy Park, Mid Wilshire, or the Fairfax District.

is very good, north of Montana. Playa del Rey is pretty too. El Segundo is a very nice town and has a great community Christmas parade with a snow machine in the end. At least, they did have it before. Don't live in the valley though. Good luck!

but then I grew up there. There are lots of upscale apartment buildings as well as fine older homes to rent. Many beautiful neighborhoods all over the city, and a thriving cultural and commercial life too. The area around Cal Tech has some incredibly nice apartments.

I visited a few years ago. Frommer's discussion of shopping in Silver Lake (& Los Feliz)--gives an idea of the neighborhood(s):

"Located at the eastern end of Hollywood, and technically part of Los Angeles, these two communities have been rising steadily on the hipness-meter. Silver Lake, named for the man-made Silver Lake reservoir at its center, is a bohemian community of artists and ethnic families that's popular for nightclubbing and barhopping. Los Feliz is northwest of Silver Lake, centered on Vermont and Hillhurst avenues between Sunset and Los Feliz boulevards; it's slightly tamer, and filled with 1920s and 1930s buildings. You'll find tons of unique businesses of all sorts, including artsy boutiques, music stores, and furniture dealers that have inspired some to compare the area with New York's SoHo.

My experience--Silver Lake has famous architecture & is less wild than the Frommer people seem to find it. (Perhaps it's because I remember the roach-infested band houses of Houston in the sixties & seventies.) Felt pretty safe.
