Time to lift the 1000+ posts cap
It seems to me there are now untold hundreds of posters with 1000+ posts. To this effect post count is no longer a status symbol. How are we to identify our "elder statesmen" here on DU? Two possibilities exist

(A)2,000, 5,000 or 10,000 post markers

(B)The actual number of posts

1. Comment: You recently passed the 1000 mark yourself.
Feel free to post celebration threads for yourself when you pass your next milestones if you really want folks to know how many posts you've had.

Whether the counter stays as is or goes back to the way it used to be doesn't concern me much.

(I only posted this to pad my post count ;-))

3. I feel the limit gives a sense of false egalitarianism
Jiacinto = 23910 posts
Wonk = 7682 posts
Wuushew = 1267 posts

Are we truly equal? Perhaps in the validity of our ideas but not in the fruits of our labors. It could be argued that a high post count is represenative of one's dedication to DU. Athough I avoid the lounge and generally limit myself to GD.

11. Yes you are truly equal
What makes someone with 10000+ posts anymore important than someone with 5000+ or 1000+ or even 100+ posts.

I for one am quite happy with this system. If you really need to know my post count (which I think is around 9000) then click on my profile. Beyond that who cares???

2. I'm good with the current system.
A thousand is a good investment of time; now you can get to it slowly or by posting a bunch of silly threads, but it still shows some staying power.

I can guarantee I've been here longer than some of the over 1k posters--because it is more important to me to get as much information as I can with my precious time than to say what has already been said (most days!) Heck, I lurked for at least six months before responding at all.

I would think that in 1,000 posts, you can spot a disruptor. We all know a few very conservative posters who have over 1,000 posts, but I see that as them having taken the time to form friendships. That is very hard to fake, btw.

Although I do like your idea about adding additional post markers-- it doesn't really matter to me.

4. Current system is good
Got tired of all the threads where people just posted crap to push up their numbers. Silly, the whole thing.

8. Concentrate on quality not quantity?

How about

(C) The content of their posts?

As a mainly read-only visitor, the number next to the name has very
little significance as some "high numbers" post crap while other
"low numbers" post informative/interesting/reflective/funny stuff.

Similarly, the "elder statesman" concept is dubious: some great
posts have come from people I've recently discovered to be school-age
girls - perhaps this is because they listen, think then reply rather
than just expounding their own age-hardened views yet again?

Does it really matter to people out there?

9. Post count is irrelevant
Why should the number of posts be a "status" symbol. Just because someone has 20,000 posts doesn't mean that they have more insight than someone with 100.

Exactly. That's the point. :)

edit: If you knew this post belonged in another forum, why did you deliberately post it here? Just wondering...

12. After tangling
with someone who was spouting right wing crap, yet had well over 1000 posts, I was chastised for not being respectful. My posts were deleted, but his crap was allowed to stay. High post count in this instance did nothing but tell me who to put on the "well, he's an asshole" list. If you're here long enough and read a whooole lot, you really get to know who merits true respect.
