69. That's their point
Hunting for sport IS cruel and senseless. Hunting to survive is soemtimes a neccessity. Not everyone has the money and access to food that we do and they hunt in order to live. Accusing them of being cruel and barbaric is rediculous.

4. Just itching for some flames today, Skittles?
;-)

I don't have a problem with hunting per se, and I'm not a hunter myself. It's just that when you've got a depth finder, scented lures, a fish locator, etc. just where's the SPORT in that? Hunting should be about YOU outwitting the animal, not your technology.

Up to a real challenge? How about you strip down to your underwear, go into the woods with nothing but a rock, and bring back a buck? Now that'd be impressive.

Not so much "entertaining" as "eating". Something to consider.

Do you eat meat? Wear leather? Because slaughter houses and factory farms are an infinitely greater contributor to animal suffering and death than hunters.

34. You don't???
"If it is killed, it deserves to be eaten."

Yes, deserves. Deserves to be used wholly, not just for its pelt and toss out the rest. It deserves to have its bones made into needles or spears, its pelt deserves to be made into clothing, its meat deserves to be eaten, and the whole animal deserves to be respected, even after its death.

If it has fed me, clothed me, and helped to defend me, I am grateful to it and I hope, if it has a soul, that the animal receives a welcome reward.

23. The latter is unsupportable
Do you think the fish that is caught on a hook in its mouth and struggling to breath is not suffering greatly. And doing this just for someone's enjoyment is horrible.

Hunting for sport is disgusting. If you love the sporting aspect, go out there with the weapon unloaded, do everything you normally do, and just don't kill the animal.

Hunting for food is somewhat more supportable, since the animal suffers less usually than the animals in your packaged supermarket meat.

However, no need for any of that. You can live on a vegetarian diet just fine.

But I find fishing entertaining, not hunting, but I do enjoy sitting out by a lake and hoping to catch a large one. I do eat the fish, I never hunt a deer then stuff it, I think that is wrong. You hunt to eat, their is no point in killing an animal just to have their head on your wall.

At least until vegans realize how many (potentially squealing) arthropods and annelids they consume with their pesticide-free vegetation. In fact, strict vegetarians don't exist, unless they consider invertebrates a vegetable.

One of the sickest things i've seen in a long time... on an ESPN hunting program a few weeks ago, a guy had just shot and killed a huge deer and was now standing over it with his wife and (3 or 4 year old) daughter.. all admiring the carcass. The dad says over and over again "what a BEAUTIFUL deer, what a BEAUTIFUL animal" while his young daughter is PETTING the carcass. Dude- you just KILLED the "beautiful animal." Unbelievable.

Where the man, or woman in my case, takes a knife and slits the animal from stem to stern and disembowels it.

Please, people. I eat life, therefore I am - just like any other animal on this planet. It isn't pretty. It never will be. Whether it is vegetable or animal, it still takes a life that contributes to the ecosystem of the entire world. Our mission, as cognitive beings, is to leave the smallest print we can in whatever way WE deem appropriate for survival. Choose to be a vegan, choose to be an omnivore, choose to be a carnivore. The great thing about being human is that we recognize we have choices. It is pure arrogance to put yourself above the choices of others. You can not make that decision for others. It is pure arrogance to think you are not part of an ecosystem that depends upon you playing your role.

Now, since this is Democratic Underground, I'm trying to figure out why we are bashing anyone but conservatives here. Considering the Dem party is a big tent and all. This seems so unproductive in so many ways, except to give Skittles a chance to vent and cough up that hairball.

Hunters don't kill animals for entertainment. My late father fed us that way.

Insult Siegfried & Roy for exploiting animals if you want.

And slam hunters that are assholes - the ones that kill animals and leave them to rot (A SLIM Minority).

Our human species evolved and grew to master the earth due to the animals that we hunted, killed and ate.

>And slam hunters that are assholes - the ones that kill animals and >leave them to rot (A SLIM Minority).

From my experience, hunters who hunt for food are the slim minority. I watched my brother, father and their friends poach so many times and leave the animal on the side of the road so it would look like roadkill. They killed everything from raccoons to mountain lions and left them to rot. Disgusting.

I don't think I've ever known a hunter that obeyed the law. You're not exactly going to get the ones who poach to admit it.

Not really. But somebody might as well say it.

I don't hunt, and don't go for fishing. But I respect the rights of people who do it respectfully.

It's been a part of mankind since we came down from the trees, and is not going away anytime soon.

Now, are a *lot* of hunters jerks? Probably. A lot of Americans are jerks in a lot of ways.

Would you ban Native traditional and/or subsistence hunting? This is one of the primary ways these people maintain some cultural heritage, rather than all crowding into quonsets and drinking themselves to death.

Perhaps we should put native hunters, and those who share their respect for the living thing they have harvested, into rehabilitation camps to cure them of there "diseasesed" world view.

44. How To Lose An Election
1) Identify a significant portion of the electorate who might otherwise agree with your political agenda.

2) Alienate that portion of the agenda to satisfy your need to appear holier-than-thou.

are Democrats and not agent provocateurs who have every other post yanked for inciting internecine holy wars.

52. I work for a fishing and hunting magazine
and I hate hunting and I am a vegetarian. My job requires me to read every hunting story word for word. And some of them are quite graphic, which makes me hate hunting even more. But it is a job and they are hard to come by right now. I get so angry when the hunter describes what a thrill it was to kill that big buck and how happy he is to get that huge set of antlers. Our magazines are all about trophy hunting and from what I see, that's what most hunting is all about.

64. Only for under endowed men
Know several of them myself. Hunting magazines aren't the place to go if you want to understand the average hunter. Been hunting for 28 years and haven't brought home antlers yet. But I did fill my freezer with meat that came from an animal which lived free and died much more humanely than in a slaughterhouse.

61. I disagree
Hunters are an under-appreciated ally for environmentalists. Both have interests in preserving habitat.

I'd rather have a few animals killed for sport than entire species rendered extinct by habitat development.

62. It would be the height of laziness to loll around in a boat for no reason
therefore you put a fishing pole in your hand and a line over the side and hope no pesky fish disturbs your revalry..that is why I LOVE fishing. I do not think I have ever caught a single fish that way...oh well!!!

I agree our canines are WAY to short for the hunting cabal, and our intestines too long.

67. I used to hunt
and fish. Don't do either anymore - watched a beautiful animal die too slowly because I'd put a bullet in it for no good reason and decided that wasn't something I needed to do anymore. I'd hunt or fish if I needed it for subsistence, but that eventuality is highly unlikely.

People who do canned hunts for entertainment are the biggest assholes. You know who I mean - the rich bastards that have someone release a panther from a cage right in front of them so they can put a bullet into it. Yuck.

I don't know, I'm pretty ambivalent over the whole thing, but I do think hunting for the sheer entertainment of killing is weird. I do have to point out that when I was doing catch-and-release fly-fishing, we took the barbs off our hooks, used artificial flies, not bait (bait gets swallowed more deeply), and in every way tried not to harm the fish. Most of the time, it was just an excuse to run up and down the river. But no one is a more ardent protector of wilderness than a catch-and-release fisherperson, because the fish don't survive in compromised streams.

70. Skittles,
are you a vegetarian? What is the difference between killing an animal for entertainment or killing it for food? The animal is dead either way.

71. I'm glad to know now that you don't eat meat
or wear leather products, because if you do, you are directly contributing more to animal suffering than any hunter. Most deer who are shot die very soon after, compared to the burger you're eating. That cow had to go through a lot more pain.

72. Thanx Skittles!
Meat is murder.

And you know, I almost didn't post to this thread 'cuz I didn't want to piss anybody off here. But its how I feel, and I reach the same conclusion everytime I have this type of discussion.

Hunters - people who invade the habitat of these creatures - their home, hide in bushes and trees, bait the poor things with feed and scent and fake animal calls, and then shoot them with guns or bows and arrows. Where the hell is the sport in that anyway!

These are living, thinking, feeling creatures, and we have no right to murder them. Their flesh is not necessary to our survival. And yes, fish are included.

Thanx again, Skittles.

Maybe they should try having some of them bullets returned in their direction, might make them think twice?

77. Aren't they neccesary in some circumstances?
I know they aren't in ideal circumstances. Here in Pennsylvania, according to whoever the hell pay attention to this crap, the Deers are becoming overpopulated. So... if some people did shoot and eat some, wouldn't there just be more to smash into with your car and leave on the side of the road.

I don't hunt, don't eat meat or dairy, but I think there are some circumstances when hunting isn't that bad.
