Books you just couldn't get.
"A Voyage to Arcturus" by David Lindsey (out of print) is my vote. I've read this thing at least once a year for the last 10 years on the gut feeling that it contained some truth that was just barely eluding me. After a dozen or so reads, I'm no closer to understanding it.

You?

2. "Minima Moralia" by Theodor Adorno
I can kinda understand the appeal of reading a very grumpy old German guy rant about the modern world and the meaning of art, but clearly this wasn't the book I was looking for in that department.

5. That Noble Dream...
a historic-discipline-specific book about objectivity, which concludes that objectivity isn't possible and is only a noble dream.

Can't remember the author's name at the moment. The book is like a dry, rocky field, and the average reader's mind is like a rusty blade trying to get through it.

7. A Confederacy of Dunces. I thought is was boring and Unfunny
It also seems that every other person in the world LOVES it and thinks it is a comic masterpiece. It was one of the most tedious books I have ever read. (And I even love reading Adorno and Pater).

As I am suffering from a life of bibliophilia, I like to say "A Confederacy of Dunces" is a book to love for people who don't read much. (I don't really think so, but glorying in being a snob infuriates others so it is a fun pronouncement to make.)

10. Doesn't Mark You As a Snob
Just marks you as someone who didn't get it. Doesn't make me mad - just makes me laugh!

8. I didn't like
Cryptonomicon at all. It seemed very "male fantasy," and I had to struggle to get through it.

9. Ulysses

Got about 70 pages into it and said, ":wtf: did I just read?" Then I put the book down and never looked at it again.
