Need help -- computer problem (MAC OS 9.1)
My daughter's mac (OS 9.1) just stopped being able to connect to the internet -- I tried dumping a bunch of preference files that earthlink suggested, but that didn't work. The guy suggested that maybe the ethernet card (built in) was no good, so I bought, installed and 'selected' that ethernet card. Both the built in and the new card pick up the right IP address -- so they're receiving from the home portal, but when one clicks on IE or netscape, I still get an error message that it can't connect. I've done searches on Apple and Macfixit.com, but I've come up empty. Anybody have any ideas.

3. Try Connecting from Remote Access
I think that's what it's called - you'll have to enter your dial-up tn, account name and password in it, but once it's done, it's done.

5. All DSLs Have TNs!
You should really try to connect through the provided Apple software, and not through a browser. I use OSX, and can't launch the OS9 software, sorry.

DSL is a twisted copper pair - you do have to connect via a phone number.

6. The computer in question is connected like the others in my house
by ethernet cable to a router which connected to a home portal DSL thing that is connected to a telephone outlet. It doesn't dial a number like our phone modem used -- the computer is connected as soon as it's turned on.. The router light for said computer indicates it's on (we've tried other cables that we know work, but that's not it). The fact that the TCP panel picks up the correct IP address seems to indicate that it's reading correctly from the home portal -- but when we try the two browsers loaded on the computer (IE and Netscape) -- no go. Until about 10 days ago these browsers worked fine,

8. Good Luck!
I have newer equipment and don't use any M$ software, so I'm out of options. Might call your DSL support line.

7. Make sure the proper extensions set is active
If somehow the active extensions set was changed, it might not include the proper extensions for Earthlink or internet access. The proper one would probably be called "My Settings." Go to Apple Menu>Control Panels>Extensions Manager to check.

You might also try reinstalling Earthlink, and not just deleting preferences.

What is the exact error message?
