Oct. 14th and I have the fricken' FLU!

The flu isn't supposed to strike this early... and not healthy people like me.

This just sucks. They said that it may even be pneumonia, I won't find out about that until my chest xrays tomorrow.

Anyone have any good home remedies to kill the flu? And ideas for foods I can stomach?

1. Damn! I might be visiting Houston this weekend too!
Sorry you're sick! I have zero home remedies except for the old stand-bys - rest and fluids.

2. Turmeric
Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 03:47 PM by jono
My partner is from India and he makes this turmeric and butter drink when I'm sick. Try adding a teaspoon of turmeric and a little lump of butter to a glass of hot (boiling) water, and drink while still warm. It takes a little getting used to, but it really helps.

on edit: I hope you feel better! :hi:

7. hm, well, it can't hurt!
Guess I'll try it next time I'm in the mood for some tea.

Thanks for the idea!

3. This flu season scares a lot of epididimologists... with the rise
of resistant bacteria and SARS still lurking around, it could be really bad this year.
Are they actually calling it flu? Or are you having flu-like symptoms?
There is a big difference.

6. is there a diagnostic test?
I have flu-like symptoms: temp of 102.3 yesterday at home and 101.9 at doc's today. Sweating, muscle soreness all over, headache, sore throat, my skin is very sensitive, I have no appetite (which is VERY unusual for me!) and my breathing is shallow (that's why they xrayed me for pneumonia).

What's weird is that I'm usually not at all sick. Guess having a DH with a sinus infection, a kid with strep, and moving all in one week brought me down.

8. Yes, there is. That is why I was wondering if they did one.
Did they give you antibiotics? If so, it probably is not flu, at least in the Doc's eyes, since antibiotics do not work on viral conditions.
I am looking hard at the CDC site for reports of flu... have not found any in the US yet.

11. no antibiotics.
She prescribed an anti-viral (Tamiflu) but I haven't picked it up yet since I didn't want to waste the $50 copay if it turned out to be something else.

9. We'll be buddies, *cough_wheeze*, then
I just got out of a stay in the hospital involving pneumonia. Not a pleasant thing.

I highly recommend garlic soup.

12. ooh yum.
Once I feel like eating, that could be a possibility!

How long were you in hospital? I'm feeling better now, but that's 'cuz I'm taking drugs.

10. Flu, or just this damn cold...
I got, along with a thousand other people around here.

Horrible dry cough, runny nose, and generally feel weak, dizzy, and like death warmed over.

Some ancient medical text once said that when properly treated a cold will go away in 7 days-- untreated, it will take a whole week.

My personal feelgood tricks:

Orange juice, but ABSOLUTELY ONLY fresh squeezed.

Swee-Touch-Nee tea. No idea why other brands don't seem to work.

Lean red meat, and lots of it. With mass quantities of leafy green vegetables.

Sleep under a ton of blankets and sweat it out.

13. Well, the good news:
I lost 5 lbs. I was wanting to as my college 10-year reunion is in 1.5 weeks. Guess I don't need Atkins, afterall! :P

14. I was laid low with a bad cold Monday (NYC)
crawled into work yesterday and feel better today. But I NEVER get sick so it might have been a flu.
