Poll question: Favorite Genre Of Music
Edited on Wed Oct-15-03 10:58 AM by Magic Rat
This should be a little interesting, we talk so much about rock and roll, maybe fans of other music would like a say.

1. I can't believe that with all the old hippies who post here
you didn't include 'Folk' as a category. And what about 'blue grass'?

3. I hope the smiley face means you aren't serious
The sad part is that I know a lot of baby boomer types that actually believe that.

Ugh.

4. My ideal genre would be a fusion of free jazz/noise and power pop.
Only a few bands have come close: the early Soft Boys, MX-80 Sound, Guided by Voices, some early Sun Ra (with vocals), Fish and Roses, Karate. Oh, and some Zappa and Beefheart, too. Would help if there were some comedic/ satiric/ political lyrics, like Zappa's.

7. Frank Zappa
I think he is his own Genre.

He touches most that already exist, and creates a few of his own.

Cheers

8. Many if not most of these genres overlap
I picked Rock only because it seems the broadest.

Rock would include much pop, some folk, most blues, some jazz (Miles, Mahavishnu, Sun Ra, etc.), some classical (hello FRANK ZAPPA!), some world, lots of country, most rap and R &B, etc, in my broad definition.

I enjoy music in all of these genres.

9. AAA, or triple A
It's sort of a combination of folk, pop, and alternative rock. Think of artists like Sheryl Crow, Chris Issak, Shawn Colvin, and, of course, Neil Finn, and you'll start to have an idea of what this is.

17. I voted for "world," but...
...gagged a bit while doing it. It's just another emblem of our gross ethnocentricity that we can come up with a dozen or more categories to differentiate minor and subtle variations on what is essentially late 20th century American popular music, and then lump the entire balance of human musical expression into something called "world." Which leaves us in the uncomfortable position of trying to find commonality between Javanese court gamelan and nose flute playing of native Amazonians.

*sigh*
