Just pissed off my GOP cousin

My cousin, whom I love like a sister but tows the GOP party line, sent me an e-mail that pushed me to the limit.

It was one of those "boycott Tim Robbins, Sean Pean, the Dixie Chicks" type of shit. I responded as to how I support freedom of speech and so on. I also said (and I replied to all on list), that I don't send out liberal issue related e-mails and don't care to get right wing ones to me.

She got all pissed and told "no to run off like a cry baby" and not "take life so damn serious".


Guess I won't be getting a Chirstmas card from her.

I recently did a Reply to All to a cousin's husband who recirculated a BS attack that Clinton had done nothing to respond to various terrorist attacks during his presidency. I did a chapter and verse on every one of the attacks cited and exactly how many terrorists had been sentenced to life without parole in US/fed prisons, which ones had been beheaded by Saudi Arabia, etc. A number of people replied thanking me for taking the time to refute the BS. But one woman replied with a totally unrelated, and of course typically undocumented slur of President Clinton and told me to "lighten up." I slammed her really hard with a concise list of Bush's disastrous policies/actions - on Iraq, the economy, the number of US soldiers being shot like fish in a barrel in Iraq,etc., and ended by saying that it was time she got some real news instead of watching Fox and listening to that pathetic, hypocritical drug addict, Rush Limbaugh...and "If you don't take these things seriously, than you tell me one thing you DO take seriously." Her reply was "Please take me off your email list." I'm sure that what bothered her more than anything was having Limbaugh's drug addiction thrown in her face.

Excellent post ! Throw their rightwing bulshit right back in their faces ! If you still have a copy of that e-mail refuting the allegations that Clinton did not doing anything to fight terrorism, I would love to have a copy of it please. Just PM me with if you don't mind. Thanks ! :hi:

...sent me an email once full of the typical right-wing hate-mongering and character assasination. I replied with what I considered to be a thoughtful, fact-filled rebutal of the lies and distortions she had sent me.

Her reply was a single liner complaining about how negative the liberals always were. Huh? That was such a total non-sequitar and so completely at odds with the negativity of her original email that I resolved once and for all not to waste my time trying to discuss politics with her any more.

I love my mom dearly, but when I visit if she brings up politics I just change the subject. It's really sad, and I hate like hell to see her being taken in by all the propaganda, but, sadly, I've discovered after many earnest attempts that there's not a thing I can do about it.

I would definatly not mention politics anymore. I have a couple of second cousins I was just as happy to blow off because they're ignorant racist bastards, but you can't let politics come between you and your mother.

I've tried to explain to my cousin that I don't want this type of e-mails sent to me. I just finally lost it.

Some of them prefer not to discuss politics. However, when we do discuss divisive political issues they are generally polite and good-natured about it.

Don't seem to be many of these kind of family stories on DU -- maybe mutual respect doesn't make good copy.

family members who worship Bush*. You have to realize that you cannot argue facts and logic with them. It all comes down to how much you have invested in the relationship and how offensive they are.

Can you take it? If so, you deflect, change the subject, leave the room, etc. That way, you can keep them in your life.

If you cannot take it, you minimize the contact (unfortunately, sometimes down to zero). The positive side of that is that you remove a source of stress and pain from your life.

Her husband just sent me this long e-mail full of basic freeper points (some were actually some very thought out points), but of course closed it with that I need "educate" myself.

Funny, when every he attempts to talk politics to my step-father he doesn't last one mintute. My step dad stops him in his tracks in a hurry.

I'd post the responce e-mail, but I deleted it. Well, I fell asleep half way thru it.
