I won't vote for my Dem congressman again
This yes on the Syria sanctions bill was just the
last vote I can tolerate from my Congressman Adam Schiff.
He votes Republican-lite every single time. I won't
vote for the Republican who will run against him,
but I won't vote for Schiff either.

Run an actor...who knows maybe he or she will win.

2. A majority doesn't help...
if the bastards vote on the other side every time a vote comes up.

11. Yes, a majority DOES help.
With a majority we would control the committees, we would control what does and does not come to a vote on the floor.

5. The Democratic Party supported the Syrian sanctions bill
The bill was written by Eliot Engel, a liberal Democrat from the Bronx, and was passed with the near-unanimous support of the Democratic caucus. The Bush Administration, not the Democrats, have been the ones opposing this bill from day one. Its only because the Bushies changed their mind that this was passed.

If you support a softer line on Syria than is held by Congressional Democrats, then you should support the Administration. Or if even Dubya's been too tough, maybe you should consider voting Ba'athist in the next election.

13. It was over the top
but I think its important to emphasize the hypocrisy of the Bush Administration - that in this case its the Administration that has been cow-towing to Syria's gangster regime and its state-sponsored terrorism.

And Syria's Ba'ath Party has supported international terrorism to a much greater extent than their Iraqi counterparts ever did.

6. Schiff came in handy to get rid of Rogan but you have to remember
He is in a district that was VERY loyal to George Deukmejian due to the high concentration of Armenian immigrants in that district. My recommendation....find an Armenian Dem.

7. I don't understand. This bill passed 398 to 4.
What is wrong with a bill imposing sanctions on a country that supports terrorists? This is not another war authorization bill, by my understanding.

Obviously the vast majority of Dems voted for this bill.

12. How is this 'Israel-whoring'?
This is about Syria, not Israel.

14. I think its a fair accusation
even if it is incorrect.

Syria has been the single biggest obstacle to Mideast peace for thirty years.

In the last few years, Syria's refusal even to consider peace with Israel brought down the Barak government and ensured Israel's right-wing lurch.

Presently it effectively occupies Lebanon and has been pushing Hezbollah to attack Israel, despite the fact that Israel acceded to Hezbollah's prior demands.

It has consistently funded, trained and armed only the most radical elements of Palestinian society, providing a safe haven for Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. By doing so, it has made it impossible for more moderate Palestinians to survive politically, prolonging and exacerbating the violence.

So yes, you could say that we're being hard on Syria because of concern for Israel. Except that's wrong.

Because Syria shares a long border with Iraq and is therefore a present threat to us and our own.

And because Mideast conflict, more than being merely a threat to Israel, is also a threat to our own safety and stability.

15. The Syrian goverment sucks, no question....
Edited on Thu Oct-16-03 11:33 AM by edzontar
But this is the US lining up with Israel after the (questionable, at the very least) bombing raid, and AGAINST the ENTIRE REST OF THE WORLD!!!!

Sharon and his gang of thugs have been raping the Palestinian land and people, building their new Berlin Wall, and doing eveything they can to TORPEDO any hope of peace.

This is not to defend either Syria or the suicide-bombers, but IMHO Israel's continued brutal and ilelgal occuptation, colonilaization, and ehrnic cleansing in the Palestinian territories is by FAR the greates problem in the region.

By supporting them in this way, our fearless leaders are doing nothing more than painting targets on all of our backs.

17. I used to be in Schiff's district as well. Hes a sell-out isnt he?
Some friends of mine still live in his district and are so disappointed. They have written letters to him that have been met with no answers.

I cant believe he has turned out this way, but perhaps I can. I thought he was going to be a good rep. I even volunteered for the guy!
