Song lyrics that give you the lump in the throat or back chill....
Edited on Thu Oct-16-03 12:06 PM by vi5
You know the feeling.

Dear God by XTC
Pride (In The Name of Love) by U2, especially the line "They took your life, they could not take your pride"
A Little Rain by Tom Waits
In The Ghetto by Elvis Presley
Sign of the Times by Prince
Peace Love and Understanding by Elvis Costello
Just Like Heaven by the Cure, especially the last verse
Thank You by Led Zeppelin
What's Going On by Marvin Gaye

I could have added about a dozen more U2 songs, but I digress

2. What's weird about that is....
I hate that song, but I can totally see where it would have that effect. One of those subjects that no matter the context is just extremely touching.

6. Too funny - I TOTALLY agree
I am NOT terribly fond of it either, but once you lose your father, all you need to do is hear the first two verses and you are a mess!

My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder

by Red Sovine.

<snip>
But you see, I get lonely and it helps to talk
'Cause that's about all I can do, I'm crippled, and, I can't walk!"
I came back and told him to fire up that mike
And I'd talk to 'im, as long as he liked

"This was my dad's radio", the little boy said
"But I guess it's mine and mom's now, 'cause my daddy's dead!"
"Dad had a wreck about a month ago
He was trying to get home in a blindin' snow

Mom has to work now, to make ends meet
And I'm not much help, with my two crippled feet!"
"She says not to worry that we'll make it alright
But, I hear her crying, sometimes late at night

You know there's just one thing I want more than anything else to see
Aw, I know you guys are too busy to bother with me!"
"But, you see, my dad used to take me for rides when he was home
But, I guess that's all over now, since my daddy's gone
</snip>

9. "The Pagans and the Christians" - Dar Williams
.
.
.
Till Timmy turned to Amber and said, "Is it true that you're a witch?"

His mom jumped up and said, "The pies are burning," and she hit the kitchen,
And it was Jane who spoke, she said, "It's true, your cousin's not a Christian,"
"But we love trees, we love the snow, the friends we have, the world we share,
And you find magic from your God, and we find magic everywhere."

So the Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table,
Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able,
And where does magic come from? I think magic's in the learning,
Cause now when Christians sit with Pagans only pumpkin pies are burning.

14. Blink 182, Adams Song
there are others, of course, but this one always gives me goosebumps...

Adam's Song by Blink 182 (pics)
I never thought I'd die alone
I laughed the loudest who'd have known ?
I traced the cord back to the wall
No wonder it was never plugged in at all
I took my time , I hurried up
The choice was mine I didnt think enough
I'm too depressed to go on
You'll be sorry when Im gone
I never conquered , rarely came
16 just held such better days
Days when I still felt alive
We couldn't wait to get outside
The world was wide , too late to try
The tour was over, I'd survived
I couldn't wait til I got home
To pass the time in my room alone
I never thought I'd die alone
Another six months I'll be unknown
Give all my things to my friends
You'll never set foot in my room again
You'll close it off, board it up
Remember the time I spilled the cup
Of apple juice in the hall
Please tell mom this is not her fault
I never conquered , rarely came
Tomorrow just holds such better days
Days when I can still felt alive
When I can't wait to get outside
The world is wide , the time goes by
The tour is over, I've survived
I can't wait til I get home
To pass the time in my room alone

16. I have no idea who wrote this....
Its like watching a a trainn wreck. It sucks, you know it sucks, but you still suffer through it when it comes on the radio - kinda like the way I still watch a cheesy bad movie I've wasted 2 hours on before when I happen to flip past it on TV...

"His Father Was The Blind Man On the Bleachers"
He's just the blind man in the bleachers, To the local home town fans.
And he sits beneath the speakers, Way back in the stands.
And he listens to the play by play, just waiting for one name,
He wants to hear his son get in the game.
But the boy's just not a hero, He's strictly second team.
Though he runs each night for touchdowns, In his daddy's sweetest dreams.
He's gonna be a star some day.Though you might never tell,
But the blind man in the bleachers knows he will.
It's the last game of the season on a Friday night at home,
And no one knows the reason why the blind man didn't come.
And his boy looks kinda nervous, Sometimes turns around and stares.
Just as tho' he sees the old man sittin' there.
The local boys are tryin' but they slowly lose their will,
Another player's down and out he's carried from the field.
At halftime in the locker room. The kid goes off alone
And no one sees him talkin' on the phone.
And the game's already started, When he gets back to the team.
And half the crowd can hear his coach yell, "Where the hell ya been?"
"Just gettin' ready for the second half," Is all he'll say.
"Cause now ya gotta let me in to play."
Without another word, he turns and runs into the game.
And through the silence on the field, Loudspeakers call his name.
It'll make the local papers, How the team came from behind.
When they saw him playin' out his heart to win. And when the game was over, The coach asked him to tell,
What was it he was thinkin' of, That made him play so well,
"Well you knew my dad was blind," he said,
Tonight he passed away.
It's the first time that my father's seen me play.
It's the last game of the season on a Friday night at home
And no one knows the reason why the blind man didn't come.

Abraham, Martin, and John - Dion
Puff, the Magic Dragon - (embarrassing, but you have to have young sons to appreciate the sentiment behind it)
If I were a Carpenter - either Bobby Darin or Robert Plant version
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

20. "What's So Funny" wasn't written by Elvis, actually.
It's one of those music factoids that gets overlooked. I'm not being picky, just wanted to set the record straight and give props where they are due.

It was written by Nick Lowe.

But the song that gives me a lump in my throat is "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straights. Don't know why. Don't even like Dire Straights at all. But that song makes me bleary eyed.

21. Jim Webb
If These Walls Could Speak

If these old walls,
If these old walls could speak
Of the things that they remember well,
Stories and faces dearly held,
A couple in love
Livin’ week to week,
Rooms full of laughter,
If these walls could speak.

If these old halls,
If hallowed halls could talk,
These would have a tale to tell
Of sun goin’ down and dinner bell,
And children playing at hide and seek
>from floor to rafter,
If these halls could speak.

They would tell you that I’m sorry
For bein’ cold and blind and weak.
They would tell you that it’s only
That I have a stubborn strreak,
If these walls could speak.

If these old fashioned window panes were eyes,
I guess they would have seen it all--
Each little tear and sigh and footfall,
And every dream that we came to seek
Or followed after,
If these walls could speak.

They would tell you that I owe you
More than I could ever pay.
Here’s someone who really loves you;
Don’t ever go away.
That’s what these walls would say.

They would tell you that I owe you
More than I could ever pay.
Here’s someone who really loves you;
Don’t ever go away.
That’s what these walls would say.

That’s what these walls would say.

That’s what these walls would say.

22. "if you could read my mind, love" by Gordon Lightfoot
another one that I think is a really beautiful song...

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts would tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me

I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back

If you could read my mind, yeah

If you could read your mind love
What a tale my thoughts would tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind that drugstores sell
When you reach the part where the heartache comes
The hero would be you
Heroes often fail

Never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back

If you could read my mind

If you could
If you could
If you could read my mind (repeat)

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts would tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishing well

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts would tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind that drugstores sell

And when you reach the part where the heartache comes
The hero would be you
Heroes often fail

Never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone
And I just can't get it back

If you could
If you could
If you could read my mind
