Why have the Yankees won 4 MLB Championships since 1996
Edited on Thu Oct-16-03 01:05 PM by soleft
Jorge Posada
Derek Jeter
Bernie Williams

They've had the same catcher (tho he shared duties with Joe Girardi his first year), short stop and centerfielder.

Strong up the middle. That's the key variable along with pitching.

And alll three came up through the farm system.

Edited to make DS1 Happy

The best players from all over the world play in the major leagues. I think 'World Series' is a pretty accurate title these days.

It's called the World Series because it was sponsored by the "World" newspaper at first, not because of any internationalist pretentions.

4. Yep
The Yanks farm system has been a big part of the success, indeed.

Of course, through most of the 90s, the Yanks pretty much laid off the "big money" free agent market and rewarded in-house talent with fat contracts.

But in recent years, they've thrown bags of money at guys like Mussina and Giambi, and haven't won squat.

I wonder if there's a connection, and I'm a Yankees fan :)

Very exciting games. And Seattle won in a come-from-behind game 5 in the Kingdome in their last at-bat.

Great baseball!

Seattle went on to lose to the Indians in the ALCS, who then lost to the Braves in the World Series.

That's about the only year of my life that the teams I was rooting for actually won in the post-season.

Ah, 1995.

22. Who said Giambi...........

was going to be the next Mattingly......Giambi does not come close to being the player Donnie was......Defensively, Giambi loses easily to Mattingly....anybody want to do a gold glove count.........Offensively, the HR and RBI numbers are close but Mattingly was a better HITTER.......better batting average, number of hits, intelligent at the plate (good eye, good situational hitter, etc,,,) and most of all, Mattingly was a great CLUTCH hitter.......

9. well, that's partly because . . .
when other teams get their revenue sharing dollars (from the Yankees), rather than investing in their team, the owners just go ahead and pocket the money for themselves and their stockholders . . . they don't re-invest in making their teams better . . . Steinbrenner, on the other hand, invests both team proceeds and his own money in putting a quality team on the field . . .

37. so that's it.. Money...
Sure, Babe Ruth, Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig, Don Larsen. All big FREE AGENT SIGNINGS?

Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, Alfonso Soriano...ALL HUGE FREE AGENT AQUISITIONS.

Oh, Scott Brosius, Tino Martinez, Joe Girardi, Paul O'Neill...All BIG FREE AGENT TARGES IN THEIR PRIMES when they were swindled away by Steinbrenner.

The Marlins...HUGE CONTRACTS ALL UP AND DOWN THE LINE-UP. The A's can't EVER WIN without big giant FREE AGENTS EVER.

The Texas Rangers have monster years every year because they just buy their winning team.

The Dodgers have won SOOOO many World Series with their giant payroll.

The Diamond Backs went on an unprecedented streak of championships because their payroll is so high.

The fact of the matter is...not matter what you think about Steinbrenner he actually CARES about winning and spends money on the team. Where are Tom Werner's loyalties? The Red Sox or his new TV show? What about John Henry? The Red Sox or futures trading?

42. who said anyone was swindled?
again. You can pretend that the Yankees don't have a huge hammer over the rest of baseball all you want.

Rangers have one high priced position player. Not much of a supporting cast. Bad example.

What have the Oakland A's won in the Billy Beane Era?

Dodgers haven't spent well. I never said the Yankees didn't. They have also seen Kevin Brown's decline for $16mm per year.

DBacks did win with a huge payroll. It also nearly bankrupted them.

I think the world of Stienbrenner, he's charismatic and very generous. I hope it doesn't burst your bubble to learn that I don't hate the guy. I hope he get's more involved in day to day operations again.

Example
The Red Sox are facing contract years for Martinez, Lowe, Varitek and Garciaparra. There is no way they can tie up say $70mm in those four deals. If the Yankees were in a similar situation it would be no problem.

They would still have to make the good baseball decision but the Money is there, no question. They wouldnt have to choose between four players in their primes.

I don't think the Yankees should share $.01 of thier revenue. I think baseball should have its anti-trust exemption lifted. New York or north Jersey would have a third or even fourth team and it would allow for real competitive balance.

33. the homegrown talent issue
excerpt from the top ten rules for defending the Yankees in Internet Chat Rooms.

4. If anyone accuses the Yankees of "buying" their championships, argue that Jeter, B Williams, Pettitte, Soriano, Rivera, and Posada are all home-grown talent.

Then, hope that nobody notices that this represents only 6 out of 25 players, and hope they don't bring up Clemens, Mussina, Hitchcock, Witasik, Wohlers, Mondesi, Stanton, Martinez, Sojo, Knoblauch, O'Neill, Brosius, Justice, Lilly and more. Also hope they don't mention the fact that Gerald Williams was acquired but never played, much like Jose Canseco did.

Don't get all riled up, there's a game to settle it all tonight!

38. Clemens was technically a trade
And a good one. More of a transfer like European football.

But you can't pretend like the Yankees don't have a huge advantage. I say good for them for exploiting it. Just don't pretend like it doesn't exist.

Raul Mondesi. You traded a AA set up man, for a $14mm outfielder. how many other teams could do that? Six? Not thirty. It was a salary dump from toronto, the Yankees were trying out Paul Oneill replacements at $2mm per month.

All teams trade, but whenever a $$$ player is available there is one team always in the hunt for his services.

If you remember the Yankees were marginally interested in the services of Manny Ramirez, if only to drive up the price.

It sure wasn't the Boston farm system :hi:

In fact, of the Beantown starting nine, only Nomar, Nixon and Veritek came up through the Sox system. Woo, boy.

If the Yanks "buy" championships, I guess the Sox "buy" second place :)

46. Money and PPO
Money.

Money and positive probability outcome (aka luck) are why any team in professional sports wins championships.

It has little to do with individuals.

An example: No matter who wins tonight, it will be because of money and positive probability outcome. If the Yankees win, it is because they have more cash than God to plug holes in their lineups with great trade bait talent (see Aaron Boone) and because none of their key players suffered an injury that kept him out a long stretch of time. It is kind of humorous to see the money-plugging go awry every now and then (see Raul Mondesi, Jeff Weaver), but for the most part the Yanks simply have BANK. Now, if the Sox win, it is because they employ the lesser amount of cash they have in a more metrically-applied sense (aka sabermetrics) and because their players remained healthy.

The greatest asset the Sox have is not Nomar or Pedro: It is Theo Epstein. As long as he adheres to the sabermetric line, the Sox are going to be really good for a long time. Keeping Bill James around would'nt be a bad idea, either!

48. A Counterexample
My Texas Rangers. Fabulously wealthy owner. Supposedly experienced GM. For the price, they field the worst team in MLB. Why?

They don't invest wisely. I don't understand why Tom Hicks, a big Bush buddy and accomplished M&A financer, doesn't emply sabermetrics. Hell, it should be second nature to him. Instead the Rangers have squandered their best years of big money on old, overrated, over-the-hill, marginal talent that had all the things traditional basball scouting values: "the look," playoff experience, and "make-up."

Screw that. Show me something that matters, not "the look."

And yes, I am a Billy Beane/J.P. Riccardi/Theo Epstein fan.

NY Mets.......spent (wasted) lots of money on Mo Vaughan, Tom Glavine, Roberto Alomar, among others.........it's not about spending money.....alot of teams do that besides the Yanks.....it's spending it wisely.....how many teams have done that......you have to have good scouts and smart people making decisions in an organization.........it's not just about spending money......

52. Because
they hire professionals (Torre, Jeter, Clemens, Bernie, Petitte, Posada, Giradi, Mo Rivera I could go on and on) and they set the World Series as thier mark of success. They could give a shit about who won the trading deadline deals (unlike Boston who was giddy after buying (yes buying) some useless players from the Pirates). They could care less about division championships, which are just a stepping stone in thier quest. Like no other team in sports, they regard success only in terms of championships. The owners main goal EVERY season is the championship, nothing else. And having the best fans and playing in the greatest city in the world doesnt hurt either.
