I can't take it any more -- What Spam blocker do you recommend
I spend half my time deleting spam. I put it in the block spam folder in my stupid ISP email client (soon to be replaced by Eudora), and it doesn't seem to stem the flow at all. I'm up to HERE with it.

HELLLLLLLPP!

1. SpamPal works marvelously
Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 09:18 PM by Rabrrrrrr
I've used it for months, and only once or twice has it nailed a legitimate as spam. It does miss some legitimate spam, but lordy lordy, it peels out a good 98% of spam, and I trust it wholeheartedly.

And it's free.

2. It's all on how you surf the internet.
My primary e-mail account never gets spamed, because I never use it on the net only for corspondence. I use a hotmail account If I need to use my e-mail address on the net. If the hotmail account get spamed to bad, I just create another one.

and always use it for crap that requires e-mail, that you know you'll never visit. But be sure to also check of "don't send me offers" in the preferences. They will anyway, but only about 500 a week instead of 1000. And when your mailbox is full, it'll just start bouncing back the spam messages

12. That's exactly what I do ...
But I use Yahoo, which has a spam filter that puts all "questionable" email into a bulk folder so you can review it. If it's not spam, you can make sure that particular sender doesn't get caught in the filter again by clicking the "It's not spam" button. On the other hand, if spam does get through to your inbox, you can click the "This is spam" button and that sender will always be routed to the Bulk Mail folder.

But "Democrats unite" is right - don't ever use your "main" email address for newsletters, mailing lists, web site registration, etc. You can't change that address and even if you could, it's too much trouble because your friends, family and business contacts have that address.

Occasionally, a web site may require a "permanent" email address, meaning they won't except registration from a Hotmail or Yahoo email address. So I set up a secondary email address with my ISP. (I'm allowed to have 5 of them). The address is legitimate, it's permanent ... and it's still not my main address, so just in case a web site decides to pass it on and I get swamped with spam, I can always delete it and create another email account with my ISP. :-)

5. I didn't find any of them helpful
I ended up wasting more time with them than with deleting the spam.
I finally got another email address, notified all my friends and then just went into that address and deleted everything. Last Sat. when I had 165 really ugly spams I just closed that mailbox.
So far only the Nigerians and the bogus microsoft update messages are getting to me.
Good luck.

6. I clicked on one of the spam messages yesterday to see
what would happen if I unsubscribed. I got a pop-up advertising a spam blocker. I'm starting to wonder how much spam is meant only to create a spam blocker market.

8. Avant Browser
Another good one that gives you the power to turn off pop-ups. It's IE based, and pretty good.

10. If you use Outlook Express it has it's own...
...type of Spam Filter.

I won't explain it or go into the details unless you want to know.

What you're about to do will tell the Server (that you get mail from) is this:

Ok, Pal...I want you to delete every single piece of mail I receive on
Outlook Express and do it even before I get it!.......
EXCEPT the mail that I tell you is OK.....Here's a list of OK folks.

Open Outlook Express
Go to Tools...message rules....mail.
This will open up "New Mail Rule" window.
In #1 select "Where the from line contains people"

In #2 select "Delete from Server"

In #3 click "contains people"

A new window will open "select people"
Add your friends or whatever.

In same window click "Options" and put a dot on "Message Does not contain the people below.

That's it. Everybody and Spam F*ckers won't even get passed the server.

You can go back and take away or add to your list at any time.

On Edit: Remember...you don't have to type their E-Mail address in the box..just sam or suzy or whatever.
Any E-mail sent to you that does not have your friends name is history.

15. Netscape also has customizable email filters
So do all the major email programs. Before I got smart and started using Yahoo mail for all my non-personal Internet communications, I used the filters to block spam and it worked pretty well. The filters work more or less the same way in every program.

You will have the option to automatically delete emails with certain keywords in their subject line or body. Popular spam keywords are "porn" "free" "win" - stuff like that. You can browse your spam to figure out which words will work best for you. Of course, there's always the possibility that a legitimate email has one of those words, so instead of having the program automatically delete the potential spam, it's best to create a "Junk Mail" folder and when you have some free time, give it a quick look to make sure nothing important got put in there. If something legitimate was mistakenly identified as spam, you can always create another rule specifically allowing that particular sender to bypass the Junk Mail folder in the future and go directly to the Inbox.

Another trick is to create a rule that allows you to receive messages only if your email address is in the To or CC field. A lot of spam does not have your address in those fields, so they'll go directly to the junk Mail folder.

Finally, if all else fails with a particular spammer, you can create a "Block Sender" or "Block This Address" rule specifically naming that sender. This will block any mail from that particular person or domain who sent you the message.

No filter or Spam Blocker is fool-proof. You may have to tweak the rules and settings a bit in the beginning until you get the results you want.

WebAttack.com has a lot of freeware and shareware anti-spam tools. Some are stand-alone programs, others are add-ons for Outlook. WebAttack rates and reviews all the software so you can determine which one is right for you. Here's the link to the Freeware Anti-Apam filters. http://www.webattack.com/freeware/comm/fwspam.html

Good luck!

14. I hate spam too
I hadn't checked my email for a while, like a month, and now I have over 5000 messages and I'll be lucky to have 5 legitimate emails. If I only got threeor four ads a day, I might read them. How do the spammers even expect to be read if their email is being sent with 100 other spam messages per day? It's gotten out of control.
