I realize this may be a little obscure, but this song from 1986 is, imo, one of the best pop-ish tunes from the 80's.

There's one I miss. Had it on a mix tape somewhere.

it's my number one favorite. But I hate the latest remake.

I must put that on my CD list.

Start with Robert Palmer, add in a few DuranDuran strummers and pickers.

It also had some fo the absolute worst! Duran, Duran comes to mind. Also, it launched the career of Madonna, proving that no talent whatsoever was no longer required for a career in pop music. Seriously, dogs can sing now--you don't even have to be able to carry a tune.

If you looked beyond the poster boys images, Rio was a great album. Madonna, well? Can't say too much there.

.... almost anything from the Talking Heads' golden period (while Eno was producing) including tracks from "More Songs about Buildings and Food", "Fear of Music" and my personal favorite "Remain in Light". Great records all.

As for the Eurythmics, I really hated them because their "Sweet Dreams" was musically almost a total ripoff of a Squeeze song that include the lyrics Sweet Dreams. I was appalled at the brazen ripoff of the lead synth riff and almost never forgave them. No doubt Annie Lennox is a great talent, I'll never understand why they did that.

..that was a great album nonetheless

If you have digital cable you can probably find a new wave music channel.

I spent some time with it last weekend, and here's what struck me: how very non-agressive it was. Sure, there were exceptions - the angrier XTC tunes, Clash, etc. But what agression there was, rarely seemed to be directed personally ("I Wanna Destroy You" was, but Robyn Hitckcock wasn't selling albums, now was he?), more towards the established powers-that-be ("Respectable Street," "Clampdown," etc).

Most people who were into that stuff while it was happening understand that in the 1980s, "alternative" meant "alternative to Rock." (capital R intentional.)

And yet these were the bands that helped spur us on to Live Aid and Artists Against Apartheid.

It really was a sad day for modern music when Nevermind came out. I'm not saying it wasn't a great album - it was. It's just that so much good got shunted back underground in the 'grunge' rush.
