1. What do you mean by "have"?
Do you mean, "SHOULD they have responsibility" or "DO they EXHIBIT responsibility"?

I would say yes to the former, no to the latter.

2. My law student brother tells me that commercials don't have 1st ammendment
protection because they are commercial speach. You are not allowed to say whatever you want while selling stuff. For instance I can't say JVS's Pizza cures cancer.

On February 14, a Florida Appeals court ruled there is absolutely nothing illegal about lying, concealing or distorting information by a major press organization.

5. Actually, as somebody who writes and produces TV ads...
Edited on Thu Oct-23-03 07:28 PM by FlashHarry
...I can honestly say I've never intentionally misrepresented anything in a TV commercial. Part of it is my slightly incongrouous concept of 'morality,' and part of it is my deep fear of the wrath of the FTC.

Now, there are certainly commercials that don't tell the truth. Remember all the 'abdominizer' ads a while back? They were all yanked when it was revealed that the product didn't work as advertised. (What??? You mean there isn't a machine that will give me rock-hard abs without my having to diet or exercise??? No!)

7. Ads Get Away With The Truth Stretch
All The Time.... Some Recent Examples In Sloganism

Sam Adams (Always A Good Decision) Always?? How About Driving?

McDonalds (I'm Lovin' It) Who Is "I'm"?

Fox News Fair And Balanced

You Get The Idea
