New York Hotels?
A friend of mine is trying to stay in a hotel in NYC for less than $170 per night, is it possible? Can she get a room in the middle of NYC Manhattan or around there for less without staying in a rundown hotel?

Thanks,
Chilly

1. Check Out Those Travel Websites
Like Hotel.com. It can be done. It just takes a little work.

4. Ya know what?

I was born and raised in NYC, and while they may have roaches, I lived in Orlando as well, and what those guys call "Palmetto Bugs" (gee, doesn't that sound sweet. Like some kind of exotic tropical insect) is nothing more than a really big flying roach! So I will take a nice, regular-sized, non-flying, NYC cockroach over a "Palmetto Bug" any day!

3. Yes
My husband travels to NY often and always stays downtown. He often finds hotels cheaper than that.

5. I used to stay at the Roosevelt
On business. The company I worked for was real tight with the cash and it was one of the cheapest places in midtown. The rooms were clean but the place was a bit run down. Overall, it was okay.

and take a bus or train. That's what I usually do. If she's driving, it has the advantage of free parking and not having to fight traffic into and out of the city.

It depends on the date. Try www.hoteldiscounts.com. For Nov 14 (arbitrary date), here are a few:

JAZZ ON THE TOWN AT HABITAT
MOMA/CARNEGIE HALL/MIDTOWN $119

RAMADA NEW YORKER
MADISON SQUARE GARDEN $149

HOLIDAY INN MIDTOWN
2 BLOCKS FROM CENTRAL PARK $161

There are several others below $170 as well.

7. 40 bucks a night
Edited on Fri Oct-24-03 09:43 AM by AWD
Go to a hostel.

We stayed in one on 101st and Broadway for 40 bucks a night...one room, one bathroom. That's it.

And no, it was FAR from run-down.

on edit - if they don't mind sharing a dorm room, there are several places for 20-30 bucks a night. Check out this website for ALL of NYC's hostels - http://www.hostels.com/us.ny.ny.html

8. Does it absolutely HAVE to be in midtown Manhattan?
Because if you're willing to stay below 14th Street in Greenwich Village, there's the Larchmont Hotel. $60-100/night including continental breakfast.

For further info, visit at www.larchmonthotel.com
