Heavy Metal

I am baffled that heavy metal is even a genre under music? Heavy metal is just another forum of noise, why isn't banging a spoon on a tin can considered music? Sorry "Metal Heads", but heavy metal is a horrible sounding noise and am baffled that some of you consider it music.

Oh, and btw. I was a music major in college, spent 18 years playing classical music and jazz, and I love heavy metal. So while you have the right to your opinion I also have the right to tell you I think you're full of crap.

is that this is pointless. You still haven't proved that you even know what a fact is vs. what an opinion is. That you don't understand the difference between your apple example and stating "heavy metal isn't music" only proves that you aren't worth wasting time talking to.

all you are hearing is noise! Country music is music, hip hop is just another form of noise. When will noise have a 10 ten countdown?

saying something over and over doesn't make it true. You think it's noise. That's fine. It should be glaringly obvious, even to you at this point, that a significant number of people disagree with you.

But I am making my point and the fact is not an opinion, A FACT, the fact is heavy metal is noise. Jazz, Country, R&B, Folk, is music.

You can have your world of nice neat boxes, where everything fits. And those things that don't appeal to your tastes are not only looked at in contempt, but are actively bitched about.

Me, I'll live in my world of chaos, where new and different things go on. And if I happen upon stuff I don't like, I'll try to ignore it. And I definitely won't go and tell the people that enjoy the thing I don't like how low of an opinion I have of something they enjoy, repeatedly, ad nauseum.

Just because people don't like it doesn't make it any less of an art-form. It just means that people don't like it. The same can be said for most any type of music.

I don't like much country music either, but it is a valuable and expressive type of music. It takes talent to perform, produce, and write country music. I just happen not to like it. But I am glad other people do.

We have a pretty large umbrella here at DU. There is room for everybody to stay out of the rain.

Sorry, Charlie. While it may be true that some metal is just extreme noise and growling vocals, there is some highly technically proficient and melodic music out there that is also classified as metal. In fact, there are a number of bands (especially in Europe) whose music is classically inspired. There are a number of subgenres of metal, and to simply write the whole thing off as garbage is to miss out on some very good music.

When I'm talking about "good" metal music, I'm referring to bands like:

Check out some of the online music samples of these bands and then tell me that metal is nothing but noise. :shrug:

it is too much to handle for some, that's why there is a simpler and less challenging genre - country "music"

I feel punished anytime I have to listen to modern country.

In fact, I am bookmarking all these threads just to save links to new or old bands that I have not heard yet. To each his own, but I'm not sure what this thread is really supposed to accomplish?

What type of stuff are you looking for? Nu-School, old school, classic, punk inspired, speed, thrash? You into a type of sound? Lyrics? Type of singer?

I may can give some advice as well as several other posters on these boards who also appear to have some great ideas on metal.
