Decent File Sharing Source, post Napster?

Kazaa lite? Just got broadband,would liek to search for live, non-record company music. Any insights welcomed. Thanks!!

I know this get posted every few weeks, but would like to see if there are any new insights.

which interferes the most to splash ads on your machine?

It's Kazaa with all the adware and spyware stripped out.

Also, there's eMule and Shareaza.

WinMX. It's about the only one I've used and there are absolutely no ads. The interface is very DOS-like in appearance and it may not be the prettiest thing in the world to look at, but the program size is small, no ads and I've found just about everthing I've looked for to date.

I'm sure there's better ones out there, but WinMX has satisfied all my file sharing needs so I haven't really looked for the "better" ones.

It's my personal computer, anyway. I'm not using a lab computer to download songs. What's it to those jerks if I download a few songs???

bear in mind these methods are much less intuitive and require a bit of work to get working and reap the rewards.

newsgroups are tricky, you'll need a good client like http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php

newsgroups are the world's message board there are thousands of groups with millions of posts everyday. the "binary" groups have found a way of encoding a binary file into a text format to be decoded by a newsreading program. you can get pretty much ANYTHING from them, but service varies widely according to what isp you use and the retention (how long posts stay on the server) they have.

There are to many jerks on kazza that rename files, about 20% of the stuff that I download are NOT what they should be. Limewire does not have as many users as kazaa, so may not find what you are looking for. But you will probably get the right file 99% of the time. I don't like newsgroups, too many spammers on there.
I never find what I'm looking for.

Spyware-free, uses bit torrent system for all downloads.

Uploads are FAST (copies of The Daily Show are always up the next morning, for example). I just got a copy of Scary Movie 3.

The system involves a sharing device, but it's easy once you get started.

Go to www.bitconjurer.org and download Bit Torrent
Then go to www.suprnova.org and right-click on a movie or show or music file. Save the music file, the open it...you download bits of the show from many other people and it completes itself.

Go to www.suprnova.org first to see the selection. Quite amazing.

Be sure to get Peer Guardian to block bad IP addresses, Double Click, some virus servers and fake files.

but if you use a good newsreader you can sort by title and all the spam lines up at the bottom..

After last night, I came to a realization of how serious RIAA is about this situation. Apparently the RIAA or some record companies have set up 'spoof' servers to distribute corrupt files. As you know, you download files on Kazaa from several different sources, so when I downloaded some music last night, it would have sections that were corrupt and make a horrible noise in my mp3 player.

Most of the corrupted music affected by this is new music (last 2 years or so) and is pretty much limited to hiphop or rap.

After some research, I found that I am not hallucinating, and other people are having this problem.

about 2/3 of the way down on the page, I found this little tidbit that kinda put it into perspective.

So in a word, be CAREFUL. They're filing more lawsuits every day. So I decided to get out before they filed one against me. I don't need a 'copyright infringement' conviction keeping me from getting my teaching license.

Understand that I am not just a paraniod freak that is clueless about computers and networks. I have a network engineering degree, and I understand what the RIAA could be capable of, given free reign to stop file sharing in any way possible.

Simple little program that blocks IPs from the RIAA, MPAA, anti-crime organizations, Double Click, fakes servers and many others. YOu don't connect to them, they don't connect to you.

This cuts down on most issues. Not all, but most.
