should I go eMac or iBook G4 first?

Naturally with Panther being released this past weekend, I went to my local CompUSA to check it out. BUT, now I face a question--spend $130 on Panther, and install on my Imac, OR save that money since I have no problems with Jaguar, ad go for an eMacat $799 OR the new iBook G4 at $1099? I could have the eMac by or right after Christmas, the iBook G4 after New Year's. AND they'll both have Panther installed.

I am sick of the wires, WiFi looks very promising. But that 17 inch monitor and speakers...I'd only need to add more memory and the swirl stand. I'm still leaning towards the iBook...

go with whatever is the most upgradeable (RAM) and the fastest processor.
The portability of the iBook is attractive; I wish I had one. I wish I had the choice.

Inquring "road-warriors" with a Dell 2.8 GHz Intel/DVD-Burner "Notebook" with a legal notice from Micro$haft whant to know "why" and when can I escape?

I guess "Mike Dell" never told M$ about the Inspiron 8500 and three extra batteries I bought nor the Canon i70 Printer and my opinion of "customer support" origonating in India.

I hoped he liked my money as much as I used to like "his" customer support....

It would run way too hot. But not to worry G4's have a way to go.

Mine is two years old this month.

Most insider rumors say at the end of next Summer. One reads trade "rumblings" to hint at January. Hope so. I'm ready for a bump up.

While this is probably true today, with every semiconductor process "shrink", processors get faster and they draw less power per transistor.

(Whether they draw less power overall is a design decision.)

My point is that while today's G5 (PowerPC-970) processor may
draw too much power to make for reasonable use in a notebook,
this probably won't be true in 18 months or so when it has been
"shrunk" to the next step in semiconductor process technology.

At that point, G5 notebooks will probably become a reality and
we'll start seeing "dual-core" PowerPC chips in desktops, leading
to 4-way multiprocessors in desktops. (IBM's big AIX/Linux servers
today fit four dual-core PowerPC chips on a single "Multi-Chip-
Module" (MCM), giving you eight-way multiprocessing per MCM.
They then fit between two and four MCMs per big circuit card
and multiple circuit cards per box, toping out at something
like a 128-way or 256-way multiprocessor. That would make one
heck of a Mac!

Those G4 iBooks are very tempting...

Still, I like having two computers, since my livelihood depends on thsm. When my iMac's hard disk died a couple of months ago, I was EXTREMELY glad that a) I had backed up my important stuff on the iBook before moving and b) I had the iBook to work with while the iMac was in the shop.

Maybe an eMac and an iBook would be the ticket...

You can get an eMac and an iBook for about what a decent iBook or iMac used to cost. I'd get both. The new OS will automatically keep them both synced, even.

My iMac and iBook each cost about $1600. Getting an eMac and a new iBook with AirPort cards and extra memory would be closer to $2000, but that's still way cheaper than $3200.

Apple made some serious upgrades and price cuts with the newest line.

eMac costs $799.

iBook costs $1099.

Of course, you can add on to anything to increase the price. But you'll get one hell of a Mac for $1600 these days.
