2. I almost posted this info yesterday
BIG Song of Ice and Fire fan here. It's better than the Lord of the Rings imo.

I want to read the whole new book, damn it! Please finish it soon, George!

4. Too bad
I look at it as political intrigue, which can, admittedly, be soap operaish at times.

I at least "bought" his world more than I ever did many of the so-called greats of the genere. When you're captured by an army in Martin's world, you don't expect to come through the experience...errrr...whole. How many other books/series can you name that the threats seem to ring a bit hollow because nothing really bad ever happens to the main characters?

Lots of bad things happen to the main characters in Martin's world, which gives it a sense of surprise that most fantasy books lack.

Cough..."The Red Wedding" cough...cough.

8. I thought I knew how far Martin would go with his characters
And then the Red Wedding happened.

WOW...that's all I can really say...just WOW. That takes guts to do as a writer.

5. I read a short story of his years ago
Edited on Wed Oct-29-03 09:48 AM by Jack Rabbit
Sandkings was the title. It was published in Omni magazine in 1979 or 1980. The protagonist is a mean, nasty fellow who buys exotic, extraterrestial insects to keep as pets. The set up was a kind of futuristic ant farm. He starved the creatures so that they would fight more fiercely. It is an excellent piece of work.

7. If you haven't already you should read the
Ice and Fire series. So in depth and intricate. There's about 4,000 page in the series so far (including the fourth book that is yet to be published).
