HAPPY ANNIVERSARY SOCIAL SECURITY!!!!

The Social Security Administration Act (H.R. 7260) was signed into law on August 14, 1935. Social Security has never defaulted on a payment to any citizen. Social Security has withstood attacks from Right-wing opponents since before the first check was sent out until this very day.

The success of Social Security is one of the brightest of the many successes of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's GREAT presidency. Social Security, and the New Deal in general, are true examples of "American Exceptionalism," a term we liberals need to take back and redefine from the right.

So on this 70th Anniversary let's celebrate the creation and success of Social Security while reaffirming our desire to maintain this system as a social safety net not as a private investment scheme to line the pockets of the "haves." Despite our recent successes this administration has not given up their plans to redefine Social Security, let us all pledge today not to give up the fight for Social Security as Franklin Delano Roosevelt and not Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush intend Social Security to be.
